Camping near Lakes West, Connecticut
Lakes West sits in the Housatonic Valley of western Connecticut, close to the New York state line and within a short drive of state park campgrounds in both Connecticut and New York's Hudson Highlands. The area draws RV travelers looking for lake access, forested sites, and hiking without coastal crowds.
Connecticut's Department of Energy and Environmental Protection manages the nearest state park campgrounds, including Lake Waramaug State Park Campground in New Preston, Macedonia Brook State Park in Kent, and Kettletown State Park in Southbury. Just across the state line, Pelton Pond - Clarence Fahnestock State Park sits within a large preserve managed by New York State Parks, and privately run Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc offers hookup sites in Hopewell Junction, New York.
Site styles range from rustic tent-friendly loops with outhouses to lake-view sites with showers and dump stations. Rig-length limits vary by park, so RV renters should confirm site dimensions before booking, especially at the smaller Connecticut state parks where access roads can be narrow.
Things to do around Lakes West
Water activities anchor most trips. Lake Waramaug State Park Campground supports swimming, lake fishing, and paddling, with canoe and kayak rentals available seasonally. Canopus Lake at Clarence Fahnestock State Park has a sandy beach, boat rentals, and a concession, plus fishing on several ponds within the park.
Hiking is strong across the region. Macedonia Brook State Park's blue-blazed Ridge Trail crosses Cobble Mountain with views toward the Catskills and Taconic Mountains. Kettletown State Park's day-use area, including the Miller Trail, remains open even while the campground is closed, and the Pelton Pond loop offers an easy 1.5-mile walk near the pond at Fahnestock.
Off-park, the town of Kent has restaurants and shops, Kent Falls State Park sits nearby for a short waterfall hike, and the Litchfield Hills offer vineyards and farm stands.

Macedonia Brook State Park operates on a similar calendar, opening the Friday before Memorial Day and closing in mid-October. Historically, Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock has run from mid-spring through fall, though the campground has been closed to facilitate construction of a new bathhouse, so travelers should confirm status with New York State Parks before planning.
Summer weekends fill fastest, particularly around Independence Day and Labor Day. Fall foliage in late September and October is a major draw around Lake Waramaug and the Litchfield Hills, and weekend sites can book out months ahead. Cabins at Lake Waramaug are available only Friday and Saturday nights and are not offered after Labor Day weekend.

Marcie and her van were great! Marcie is a very low key host - she is very responsive and was so flexible about pick up and drop off times. Her solar batteries weren't working before our trip and she made sure they were replaced in time. Everything worked great and the van ran great. We spent a week in Acadia in the van. It was small enough that we were able to take it anywhere (including Cadillac Mountain, which doesn't allow anything over 21 feet) and park it with ease most places. We were worried about the sleeping arrangements but we ended up being super comfortable. We never used the propane, but the A/C worked great.

We had a great time on our trip in Marcie’s Solis. She was straightforward, kind, and easy to communicate with.

Easy pick up and drop off. Joe and Kim go over and above to make sure your experience with the vehicle is a positive one.

We were very pleased with our rental from Joe and Kim. The response when we had a question was instant. The unit was clean and the functionality for a 2005 unit was surprisingly good. Would definitely rent from them again.
