Campgrounds near Ridgebury
Ridgebury is a small village in the town of Ridgefield in Fairfield County, Connecticut, tucked into the wooded hills near the New York state line. It sits within easy driving range of a cluster of state park campgrounds in western Connecticut and the lower Hudson Valley, making it a practical base for an RV trip that mixes hiking, lake swimming, and quiet, forested camping.
The closest option, Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock State Park, sits just across the state line in Putnam County, New York and offers 80 wooded sites carved along the park's natural rock ridges. Private lakefront camping is available at Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc, a wooded campground with tent sites and RV sites with hookups.
Farther north in the Litchfield Hills, Lake Waramaug State Park Campground and Macedonia Brook State Park add lakeside and mountain-hike options, and Kettletown State Park anchors the Lake Zoar area to the east. Together these parks give RV renters a mix of rustic, hookup-free state sites and a private park with utilities.
Things to do near Ridgebury
Water is the main draw. Fishing by boat is permitted at Stillwater and Canopus Lakes inside Fahnestock, and both lakes and four ponds hold bass, pickerel, perch, and brook and rainbow trout. Kettletown State Park fronts Lake Zoar, the fifth largest freshwater body in the state, a popular site for water sports on the Housatonic River impoundment.
Hikers have plenty to work with. Fahnestock has over 50 miles of trails ranging from easy walks to more strenuous hikes across forests, lakes, and mountains. Macedonia Brook covers 2,300 acres, and its Blue Trail crosses Cobble Mountain and several other peaks for views of New York's Catskills and Taconic Mountains.
At Lake Waramaug, a scenic eight-mile loop road around the lake is popular with cyclists, with nearby vineyards and Kent village as easy day-trip stops.

Connecticut's state park campgrounds run on a short, warm-weather season. The Lake Waramaug camping season begins Memorial Day weekend and ends Columbus Day, and Macedonia Brook follows a similar late-spring to early-fall pattern. Summer weekends fill quickly, and holiday periods, especially Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day, book out first.
There are important closures to plan around. The Fahnestock main campground is closed to facilitate construction of a new bathhouse, though the Pelton Pond Pavilion and other day-use areas remain open. Kettletown State Park Campground is closed after flooding during heavy rainfall in August that damaged park access roads and washed out the bridge on the campground road, and Connecticut DEEP has indicated the campground will remain closed for multiple seasons.
Fall brings foliage that draws heavy day-use traffic to lake parks, while winter camping is not offered at these state facilities. Shoulder-season weekdays in May, June, and September usually offer the best mix of availability and mild weather.

Marcie and her van were great! Marcie is a very low key host - she is very responsive and was so flexible about pick up and drop off times. Her solar batteries weren't working before our trip and she made sure they were replaced in time. Everything worked great and the van ran great. We spent a week in Acadia in the van. It was small enough that we were able to take it anywhere (including Cadillac Mountain, which doesn't allow anything over 21 feet) and park it with ease most places. We were worried about the sleeping arrangements but we ended up being super comfortable. We never used the propane, but the A/C worked great.

We had a great time on our trip in Marcie’s Solis. She was straightforward, kind, and easy to communicate with.

Easy pick up and drop off. Joe and Kim go over and above to make sure your experience with the vehicle is a positive one.

We were very pleased with our rental from Joe and Kim. The response when we had a question was instant. The unit was clean and the functionality for a 2005 unit was surprisingly good. Would definitely rent from them again.

How to book near Ridgebury
Connecticut state park sites are booked through the state's ReserveAmerica portal. Camping reservations are accepted 11 months in advance until the day prior to arrival, and a two-night minimum is required for advance reservations except when booking within one to three days of arrival. Macedonia Brook requires reservations at least 48 hours prior to arrival with a two-night minimum, and walk-ins are not allowed.
New York's Fahnestock uses the New York State ReserveAmerica system, with camping reservations available up to nine months in advance. Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc books direct through the campground. For summer weekends, reserve as far ahead as possible; cancellations do open up, and third-party alert services can help catch them.
What to expect on-site
These parks lean rustic. Fahnestock has no hookups or dump station, and Macedonia Brook uses portable toilets, water pumps, and gravel parking rather than a full bathhouse. Lake Waramaug offers 76 sites in wooded and open settings with restrooms, showers, drinking water, a dumping station, and picnic shelters, which makes it the most RV-friendly of the state options nearby.
Rules are strict. Alcohol and pets are prohibited at Lake Waramaug, Kettletown, and Macedonia Brook, and no items may be attached to, hung from, or nailed to trees or structures, including hammocks, lanterns, clotheslines, and string lights. Bringing firewood into Connecticut state campgrounds from other states is prohibited, and campers should buy firewood locally.
Cell service is spotty in the more remote parks, black bears range through the region, and food and trash should be stored in vehicles overnight.
