Campgrounds near Winsted, Connecticut
Winsted sits in Connecticut's northwest hills at the edge of the Litchfield County uplands, giving RV travelers quick access to the West Branch of the Farmington River, state forest lands, and the southern Berkshires just across the Massachusetts line. Most campgrounds within a short drive are seasonal, family-oriented parks or rustic state forest campgrounds, so trip planning depends heavily on the calendar.
Close-in options include White Pines Campsites, a private campground in Barkhamsted with RV, tent, cabin, and yurt bookings, and American Legion State Forest, which offers 30 wooded sites with a mid-April through Columbus Day season. Just over the state line in Massachusetts, Granville State Forest holds 22 sites in a mature pine forest with flush toilets and hot showers but no hookups or dump station.
For larger rigs and full amenities, Prospect Mountain Campground and RV Park in Granville and Lone Oak Camp Sites further east round out the area. Together these five parks cover the range from primitive state-forest camping to full-hookup family resorts.
Things to do near Winsted
The West Branch of the Farmington River is known for cold-water trout fishing, with trophy fish measuring around 20 inches not unusual thanks to the reservoir's cold bottom releases. Paddlers use the river for canoeing, kayaking, and tubing on warm summer weekends.
Hiking is centered on the state forests. American Legion State Forest offers rugged scenery, wildlife viewing, and miles of trails, and connects to the trail network in neighboring Peoples State Forest across the river. Granville State Forest's Hubbard River cascades through natural rock formations, and the property adjoins Connecticut's Tunxis State Forest for longer routes.
Families staying at private parks like White Pines Campsites and Prospect Mountain Campground and RV Park will find pools, stocked ponds, mini golf, and weekend event programs on-site, which helps on rainy days or when kids need a break from hiking.

The camping season in this corner of Connecticut is short and defined by the state forest calendar. The American Legion State Forest camping season begins in mid-April and ends Columbus Day, and White Pines Campsites runs from roughly mid-April through mid-October, giving campers a long window into fall. Across the border, Granville State Forest typically opens in mid-May and runs into September, and Prospect Mountain Campground and RV Park generally operates from May through mid-October.
Late spring brings high water on the Farmington and cool nights. Summer is peak season, with warm days, active river use, and full weekends at family campgrounds. Early fall delivers foliage across the Litchfield Hills and the Berkshires, and it is one of the most reliable times to find quiet sites midweek before parks close for the year.
Black bear activity is a constant across the region. Sites at Granville State Forest include bear-resistant food storage lockers, since black bears frequent the area, and black bears have also been spotted on the property at White Pines Campsites, so food storage habits matter.

Marcie and her van were great! Marcie is a very low key host - she is very responsive and was so flexible about pick up and drop off times. Her solar batteries weren't working before our trip and she made sure they were replaced in time. Everything worked great and the van ran great. We spent a week in Acadia in the van. It was small enough that we were able to take it anywhere (including Cadillac Mountain, which doesn't allow anything over 21 feet) and park it with ease most places. We were worried about the sleeping arrangements but we ended up being super comfortable. We never used the propane, but the A/C worked great.

We had a great time on our trip in Marcie’s Solis. She was straightforward, kind, and easy to communicate with.

Easy pick up and drop off. Joe and Kim go over and above to make sure your experience with the vehicle is a positive one.

We were very pleased with our rental from Joe and Kim. The response when we had a question was instant. The unit was clean and the functionality for a 2005 unit was surprisingly good. Would definitely rent from them again.

How to book campgrounds near Winsted
Connecticut state forest sites at American Legion State Forest are booked through the state's reservation system via ReserveAmerica. The minimum rental is two nights, and cabins and standard sites both fill quickly for summer weekends.
Granville State Forest, just over the Massachusetts line, is stricter: reservations are required through ReserveAmerica with no walk-in camping, and sites can be booked up to four months in advance or same-day until 2 p.m. Massachusetts prohibits transporting firewood into or out of any DCR campground, and firewood must be purchased on-site.
Private parks such as White Pines Campsites, Prospect Mountain Campground and RV Park, and Lone Oak Camp Sites take reservations directly through their own websites or third-party booking platforms. Popular holiday weekends often sell out months ahead.
What to expect
Expect a mix of rustic and full-service camping. State forest sites are wooded and quiet with basic facilities: American Legion State Forest offers 30 sites in pine woods with bathrooms, showers, and a dumping station, and running water is not available early in the season. Sites at Granville State Forest accommodate tents, trailers, and RVs, though the unpaved access road and wooded setting make it better suited for smaller rigs.
Private parks skew larger and busier. White Pines Campsites features around 200 wooded sites with cabins, yurts, and safari tents in the mix, and Prospect Mountain Campground and RV Park offers roughly 200 sites with a 45-foot maximum RV length and accepts big rigs.
Cell coverage is patchy in the hills, roads are narrow and winding, and evenings cool off quickly even in midsummer. Bring layers, bear-aware food storage, and download maps before leaving town.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Winsted, CT
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Winsted, CT?
RV rental in Winsted, CT is one of the most affordable ways to explore Connecticut's Litchfield Hills. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $100 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $275, and larger Class A rigs run $250 to $400. Summer weekends (especially around July 4th and Labor Day) and fall foliage season in October see the highest demand, so booking 6 to 8 weeks ahead helps lock in better rates. For a cheap RV rental in Winsted, look at midweek dates in May or early September, when prices typically drop. Pro tip: filter for travel trailers if you already have a tow vehicle, or choose delivery so you can skip the tow setup entirely and just enjoy the lake.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Winsted%2C%20ConnecticutWhat kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Winsted?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Winsted, CT. Connecticut does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for the motorhomes and trailers available on RVezy. Renters are generally required to be 25 or older, and ID verification happens right inside the RVezy platform when you book, so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP). First time renting an RV? Your host walks you through the entire vehicle at pickup, so you're never left guessing.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included with my Winsted RV rental?
Every RVezy booking in Winsted includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Route 44 toward the Berkshires with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers accidental damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your preferred coverage level during checkout, not the host. Coverage details, limits, and deductibles vary by plan tier, so review the options before you confirm. Pro tip: consider a higher-tier plan if you're heading into the winding hills around Norfolk or Riverton, where narrow roads and tight campground turns make a little extra cushion feel worthwhile.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Winsted RV trip?
Booking an RV rental in Winsted is low-risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy across the platform, not individual hosts. There's a money-back grace period right after booking, and refund eligibility after that depends on how far out from your trip date you cancel. The policy is consistent platform-wide, so you don't have to dig through individual listings looking for varying rules. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or helps you rebook. Pro tip: book early to secure peak fall foliage dates in October, knowing the grace period gives you breathing room to lock things in with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Winsted RV rental?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Winsted is easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see listings from hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats) with clear pet fees and rules upfront. Northwest Connecticut is a dream for dog owners: Burr Pond State Park in Torrington has a leashed-dog-friendly loop trail around the pond, the Appalachian Trail crosses through nearby Salisbury and Kent, and local rail-trails are perfect for morning walks. American Legion State Forest also allows leashed pets at its Austin Hawes campground. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet details, then pack a towel for muddy paws after Mad River dips.
portal.ct.gov/deep/state-parks/pets-at-connecticut-state-parksCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Winsted?
Yes, RV delivery in Winsted is offered by many hosts, and it's the easiest way to start your trip stress-free. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts who'll bring the motorhome or travel trailer straight to your campsite at Austin Hawes Memorial Campground, White Pines Campsites in Barkhamsted, or even a private driveway in Winchester. They'll level the rig, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before handing you the keys. Delivery fees vary by distance and host. Pro tip: delivery is especially smart for a first time renting an RV, or if you're flying into Bradley International Airport (BDL) about 45 minutes east and don't want to drive a big rig out of the gate.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Winsted%2C%20ConnecticutHow does mileage work, and how far can I drive from Winsted?
Hosts set their own mileage policies, and you'll see the daily allowance (often 100 to 150 miles per day) clearly listed on each Winsted RV rental before you book. Some listings even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is great for longer road trips. From Winsted, you're well positioned: Kent Falls State Park is about 25 miles south, the Berkshires and Tanglewood in Lenox, MA are roughly 45 miles north, Mystic Seaport sits about 90 miles southeast, the White Mountains of New Hampshire are roughly 4 hours away, and Acadia National Park in Maine is about a 6.5 to 7 hour drive. Pro tip: if you're planning an RV road trip from Winsted up the coast, filter for unlimited mileage first to avoid overage fees.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Winsted%2C%20ConnecticutWhere are the best campgrounds near Winsted for RV camping?
Some of the best campgrounds near Winsted are within a short drive and welcome RVs of many sizes. Austin Hawes Memorial Campground inside American Legion State Forest sits right along the West Branch of the Farmington River and is a local favorite for fly fishing. White Pines Campsites in Barkhamsted offers full hookups, a pool, and family activities. Lone Oak Campsites in East Canaan is a larger resort-style park with hundreds of sites and live entertainment. Burr Pond State Park in Torrington has rustic sites near a beautiful swimming pond. Looking Glass Hill Campgrounds in Bantam rounds out the list with quiet wooded sites. Pro tip: reserve state park sites the moment they open since summer weekends sell out fast.
portal.ct.gov/deep/state-parks/campgrounds/state-park-and-forest-campgroundsWhen is the best time of year for a Winsted RV trip?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for RV camping in Winsted, with the peak being late September to mid-October when the Litchfield Hills explode into world-class fall foliage. Summer highs typically sit in the upper 70s to low 80s, nights cool to the 50s and 60s (perfect for campfires), and humidity stays manageable compared to the coast. Spring brings wildflowers and trout-stocked rivers from April onward, while winter drops into the 20s and 30s with snow, and most local campgrounds close mid-October through April. Pro tip: book your Winsted RV rental for the first two weeks of October, line up a drive along Route 272 to Norfolk, and you'll see leaf-peeping at its peak.
weather.gov/box/I've never driven an RV before, will I be okay in Winsted?
You'll do great, and Winsted is actually a friendly place to learn. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering driving, leveling, propane, water, waste, and electrical hookups, plus you can text them anytime during your trip with questions. For first time renting an RV, a Class B campervan or 22 to 25 foot Class C motorhome handles Route 44 and Route 8 with ease. Stick to main roads like US-44, Route 8, and Route 183, avoid the tightest hill roads around Colebrook and Riverton until you're comfortable, and take pickup day slow. Pro tip: ask your host for a 15-minute parking-lot practice loop before you leave, it's the single best confidence boost you can get.
portal.ct.gov/dmv/driver-services/driver-services/drivers-manualsWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're covered: 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every Winsted RV rental on RVezy through the renter protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you're on Route 8 outside Torrington or deep in the Berkshires. Roadside handles flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and fuel delivery. Your host is also a direct line of support for questions about the rig's quirks, and RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip. Most issues are small and solved quickly. Pro tip: snap photos of the RV at pickup, save your host's number and the roadside number to your phone before pulling away, and check tire pressure cold each morning, especially in cooler New England temperatures.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Winsted RV rental into other states or Canada?
Yes, your RV rental in Winsted, CT can cross state lines, which is great because you're within a 2-hour drive of Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont. Many guests do an RV road trip from Winsted through the Berkshires, into the Green Mountains, or down to Mystic and Newport. Cross-border trips to Canada may be allowed by some hosts, so message them before booking to confirm and to ensure protection coverage extends north. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Pro tip: a classic 5-day loop is Winsted to Lenox, MA to Manchester, VT to Lake George, NY and back, all within easy mileage limits and packed with covered bridges, swimming holes, and small-town diners.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Winsted RV trip?
Fuel is one of the biggest line items on any RV trip, but it's easy to plan for in Winsted. Connecticut gas prices typically run a bit above the national average, and most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class B campervans average 16 to 20, and travel trailer mileage depends on your tow vehicle. For a typical 4-day, 400-mile trip through the Litchfield Hills, expect to spend roughly $150 to $250 on fuel depending on current pump prices. Diesel pumps with RV-friendly clearance are available at major travel centers along I-84 to the south. Pro tip: fill up before heading north into the hill towns of Norfolk and Colebrook, where stations are sparser.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Winsted?
For Connecticut state park campgrounds like Austin Hawes Memorial Campground, Burr Pond, and Macedonia Brook, book the moment the reservation window opens through the state's online reservation system, because Litchfield County's small number of public sites sell out quickly for summer weekends. Private parks like White Pines, Lone Oak, and Looking Glass Hill usually have more flexibility, but still aim for 6 to 8 weeks ahead for July and August. Fall foliage weekends in October fill up by Labor Day. Pro tip: midweek nights (Sunday through Wednesday) are far easier to book and noticeably cheaper, so plan a Sunday-to-Thursday Winsted RV trip and skip the crowds entirely.
portal.ct.gov/deep/state-parks/campgrounds/state-park-and-forest-campgroundsWhat are the local driving conditions like around Winsted?
Driving around Winsted is genuinely pleasant once you know the terrain. The town sits in the foothills at roughly 700 feet elevation, so expect rolling hills, curving two-lane roads, and a few steeper grades on routes heading toward Norfolk. US-44 and Route 8 are the main RV-friendly arteries with wide lanes and easy turns. Use caution on narrow secondary roads north of Riverton with very large rigs. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk year-round, and note that the West Cornwall covered bridge has a low height limit and is not suitable for RVs. Pro tip: download offline maps before you go, cell service drops in the hollows around Colebrook and Sandisfield.
portal.ct.gov/dotWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Winsted?
Campgrounds near Winsted range from full-hookup private parks to rustic state forest sites, so you can pick what fits your style. White Pines Campsites and Lone Oak Campsites offer 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer, Wi-Fi, pools, and camp stores. Austin Hawes Memorial Campground and Burr Pond State Park are more rustic with vault or flush toilets and no hookups, but beautiful riverside or pondside settings. Dump stations are available at most private parks and at the American Legion State Forest entrance. Potable water fills are easy to find at any private campground office. Pro tip: if you book a state park site without hookups, choose a Winsted RV rental with a generator and a freshwater tank of 30+ gallons, and you'll be self-sufficient for 3 to 4 nights.
portal.ct.gov/deep/state-parks/campgrounds/state-park-and-forest-campgroundsWhat's inside a typical Winsted RV rental?
Most motorhome rentals in Winsted come fully equipped so you can roll in and start vacationing. Expect a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa for extra sleepers, a kitchen with a propane stove, microwave, fridge/freezer, and sink, plus a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet. Air conditioning, furnace, hot water heater, and seatbelts for travel are standard. Many listings include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning with chairs, and an onboard generator for off-grid camping at places like Austin Hawes. Wi-Fi is occasionally offered but cell-based service can be spotty in the hills. Pro tip: filter by sleeps count to match your group, and check the listing's add-ons for linens, kitchen kits, and camp chairs to skip packing the bulky stuff.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Winsted%2C%20ConnecticutWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in Winsted often offer thoughtful add-ons that make your trip smoother: delivery and setup, generator use, linens and towel packages, kitchen kits, outdoor chairs and tables, bike racks, and even pre-stocked firewood. Pickup typically happens at the host's home or a nearby meeting point, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included so you understand every system. Dropoff usually mirrors pickup, with the RV returned clean, with empty waste tanks (or a dump fee), and at the agreed fuel level. Mileage allowances and pet fees show clearly on every listing. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a linen package for a true turnkey campervan rental Winsted experience, you literally just bring a duffle bag and groceries.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Winsted%2C%20ConnecticutHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment for your Winsted RV rental happens securely through the RVezy platform, never directly to the host, so your money is protected the whole way. You'll pay a portion at booking and the balance before your trip start date, with the full breakdown (nightly rate, taxes, protection plan, delivery, add-ons) shown transparently before you confirm. A refundable security deposit is held separately for the duration of your trip and released after dropoff, assuming the RV comes back in the same condition. To avoid any hiccups, take timestamped photos at pickup and dropoff, return the rig clean, and respect the mileage and generator limits. Pro tip: keep all communication with your host inside the RVezy app so support can step in instantly if anything ever comes up.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAre winter RV rentals available in Winsted?
Yes, a handful of Winsted hosts rent year-round, and a winter RV trip in the Litchfield Hills is a genuine bucket-list experience. January and February temperatures typically average highs in the low 30s and lows in the teens, with regular snowfall, so look for listings that mention heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, and reliable propane furnaces. Most local campgrounds close mid-October to mid-April, so winter renters typically park at private properties with shore power, or use the RV as a basecamp near Mohawk Mountain Ski Area in Cornwall (about 25 minutes away). Pro tip: ask the host to demonstrate antifreeze procedures for the plumbing during your walkthrough, and pack extra propane, you'll burn through it faster than you'd expect on a 15-degree night.
