Camping near Surfside, Florida
Surfside sits on a narrow barrier island in Miami-Dade County, just north of Miami Beach and south of Bal Harbour. The town itself is residential and does not host an RV park, so campers stay at inland or coastal properties within a short drive and commute over the causeways to reach the beach.
Camping options near Surfside range from urban-adjacent campgrounds to sites within driving distance of the Everglades and Biscayne National Park. Nearby properties include Florida Park Miami and, a short drive north in Broward County, Hollywood KOA, Northcoast Park and Marina, Yacht Haven Park and Marina, and Twin Lakes Travel Park. Full-hookup sites, laundry, and pools are standard at the larger properties.
Sites tend to be close together with limited privacy, a common characteristic of South Florida camping. RV travelers should plan for tight urban layouts, verify length and slide limits at booking, and expect toll roads on most routes into and out of the island.
Things to do around Surfside
The main draw is the beach itself: a wide, walkable stretch of sand connected to Miami Beach by a continuous boardwalk running south toward Bal Harbour and North Beach. Families use the pier at Haulover Park for fishing, and the calm inlet on the bay side works for paddling and kiteboarding.
Day trips from a Surfside base cover most of South Florida's headline attractions. From a Miami-area campground, travelers can combine city visits with gator spotting in Everglades National Park, boating in Biscayne National Park, paddling through Oleta River State Park, or beach time along the barrier islands. Zoo Miami, the Frost Science Museum, and the Miami Seaquarium are all reachable within about an hour, depending on traffic.

South Florida runs on a two-season calendar. The dry, cooler months from late November through April are peak camping season, when snowbirds arrive and inventory tightens. Reservations are essential at most campgrounds in the Miami area, particularly during the winter months when temperatures moderate. Popular parks near Miami and Fort Lauderdale routinely fill months in advance for January through March.
Late spring through early fall is the wet season. Afternoon thunderstorms are near daily, humidity is high, and Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with peak activity from mid-August through October. Miami has a tropical monsoon climate with hot summers and warm winters, and summers are noticeably wetter than winters thanks to heavy seasonal downpours and daily storms.
Shoulder months, roughly late April into early June and again in November, offer the best trade-off: warm water, lighter crowds, and easier bookings.

How to book a campsite
Private RV parks around Surfside, including Hollywood KOA, Yacht Haven Park and Marina, Northcoast Park and Marina, Twin Lakes Travel Park, and Florida Park Miami, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. For winter arrivals, book as early as possible; some snowbird sites are held on seasonal contracts and turn over slowly.
For Florida state parks in the region, reservations run through the state system. Florida residents may make campsite or cabin reservations up to 11 months in advance. Non-Florida residents may make campsite or cabin reservations up to 10 months in advance. Any campsites or cabins not reserved or occupied may be rented to walk-in visitors on a first-come, first-served basis. County parks such as Larry and Penny Thompson Memorial Park in south Miami-Dade book through Miami-Dade Parks.
What to expect on arrival
Most South Florida RV parks are flat, paved or crushed-shell lots with mature palms and limited shade. Many Miami-area RV parks provide full hookups, laundry facilities, wifi, and pet-friendly sites. Fifty-amp service is common at the larger properties, but confirm at booking if traveling in a big rig, since some marina-adjacent lots have tight interior turns.
Surfside itself has strict parking rules and no overnight RV parking on residential streets, so plan to leave the rig at the campground and drive a tow vehicle or use rideshare to reach the beach. A SunPass transponder is useful for the Turnpike, causeways, and express lanes. Cell service is generally reliable near Miami, and grocery, fuel, and propane are all within a short drive of the main campgrounds.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Surfside, FL
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Surfside, FL?
RV rental in Surfside is more affordable than most people expect. On RVezy, peer-to-peer prices typically run about $95 to $225 per night for travel trailers and Class C motorhomes, and $250 to $450 per night for larger Class A coaches. Because Surfside sits in Miami-Dade County and demand spikes around Art Basel in early December and spring break in March, shoulder months like late April, May, and October usually offer the best value. For a cheap RV rental Surfside travelers love, filter by travel trailers and look for hosts offering local delivery, which saves the hassle and gas of repositioning a big rig through Collins Avenue traffic.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Surfside%2C%20FloridaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Surfside?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Surfside, FL. Florida does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for any RV under 26,000 pounds, which covers virtually every motorhome, campervan, and travel trailer on RVezy. You'll just need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking. Visiting from overseas? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association before your flight to Miami International, and you're cleared to cruise the A1A coastline.
flhsmv.gov/driver-licenses-id-cards/what-to-bring/What protection is included with my Surfside RV rental?
Every RV rental in Surfside booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built in, so you can hit the Rickenbacker Causeway with real peace of mind. You choose your level of coverage at checkout (not the host), and the plan helps protect you financially against most physical damage to the RV. That means if a palm frond falls in a summer thunderstorm or you nick a curb backing into a tight Miami Beach driveway, you have support to fall back on. Roadside assistance is one phone call away for flat tires, lockouts, jump starts, and towing.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Surfside RV trip?
Booking is low-risk because RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy, and renter-friendly terms are clearly outlined at checkout. Whether a hurricane warning rolls in off the Atlantic, your flight to MIA gets canceled, or your plans simply change, you will know exactly what applies before you book. Florida's hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, so it's smart to plan flexible dates during those months. Pro tip: book early to lock in your dates and Surfside RV trip price, and review the cancellation details at checkout so you understand your options.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Surfside?
Yes, pet-friendly RV rental Surfside options are plentiful on RVezy. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when you search and you'll see listings where hosts welcome four-legged guests (sometimes with a small cleaning fee). Surfside does not allow dogs on its public beach, but you're a short drive from Haulover Park's off-leash dog area and the dog-friendly trails at Oleta River State Park in North Miami. Many local campgrounds, including Miami Everglades RV Resort, welcome pets. Bring a portable water bowl: South Florida heat and humidity are tough on furry friends.
miamidade.gov/global/parks/dog-parks.pageIs RV delivery available in Surfside?
Yes, RV delivery to Surfside is one of the smartest ways to start your trip, especially if you're flying into Miami International Airport or staying at a hotel before your adventure. Many RVezy hosts in the greater Miami area will deliver the RV directly to your campground, vacation rental, or a meet-up point, then handle full setup and walkthrough. Delivery fees are set by each host and are commonly priced per mile from their location. Filter listings by Delivery on RVezy to see who offers it, and message hosts about dropping the rig at places like Miami Everglades RV Resort or Hollywood KOA to skip the city driving entirely.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038104654-Delivery-optionsHow far can I drive on a Surfside RV rental and is unlimited mileage available?
You've got plenty of road ahead of you. Most Surfside RV rental hosts include a set number of free miles per night, and many offer RV rental with unlimited mileage as an add-on or for longer bookings, perfect for a road trip down to Key West (about 160 miles south) or up to Orlando (about 235 miles north). Additional miles are typically charged per mile and shown on the listing. Filter by Unlimited Mileage on RVezy to see those listings first, or message the host before booking to ask about a mileage upgrade for your specific itinerary. Mapping your route ahead of time makes pricing easy to predict.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Surfside%2C%20FloridaWhere can I park or camp my RV near Surfside?
While the one-square-mile town of Surfside itself doesn't have an RV park, you have great options within a 30 to 60 minute drive. Hollywood KOA Holiday is the closest at about 25 minutes north, offering full hookups and a pool. Miami Everglades RV Resort in Homestead (about an hour southwest) has full-service sites and easy access to Everglades National Park. Larry and Penny Thompson Memorial Park near Zoo Miami is a county-run campground with affordable rates and shaded sites. For RV camping Surfside-style with beach access, head to Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park in Dania Beach (formerly John U. Lloyd Beach State Park). Book at least 2 to 3 months ahead in winter.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/dr-von-d-mizell-eula-johnson-state-parkWhen is the best time to visit Surfside in an RV?
The sweet spot for an RV trip Surfside-bound is mid-November through April, when daytime highs hover at a glorious 72 to 80°F and humidity drops to comfortable levels. This is peak snowbird season, so book your RV and campground sites early. May and early June are also great: warm beach weather, fewer crowds, and lower nightly rates before hurricane season ramps up. July and August are hot (90°F+) and humid with afternoon thunderstorms, but if you don't mind running the AC, you'll find the best RV rental deals of the year. September and October bring the highest hurricane risk, so watch the forecast and consider trip-flexibility when booking.
weather.gov/mfl/climateI've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving one around Miami?
You'll be in great shape, and you're far from alone, first time renting an RV is one of the most common bookings on RVezy. Every host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, hookups, slide-outs, the generator, and dumping tanks. You can also message your host any time during the trip with questions. For Surfside specifically, we recommend choosing a smaller Class C motorhome, campervan, or travel trailer under 25 feet, traffic on Collins Avenue, the MacArthur Causeway, and I-95 moves fast, and parking is tight. Even better, book delivery so the host drops the RV right at your campsite and you skip city driving altogether.
flhsmv.gov/safety-center/consumer-education/recreational-vehicles/What happens if I break down during my Surfside RV trip?
You're never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is just a phone call away whether you're on the Rickenbacker Causeway, the Florida Turnpike, or near the Everglades. Roadside covers common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to a qualified service center. Your host is also a resource: they know their RV better than anyone and can troubleshoot quirks over text or phone. Pro tip: snap a photo of your RV's VIN, plate, and the roadside number before you leave the driveway, so you're ready if you ever need to call.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Surfside RV rental to the Florida Keys or out of state?
Yes! An RV road trip from Surfside is one of the best ways to see the Southeast. The classic route is U.S. Highway 1 down to Key Largo (about 75 miles), Marathon (130 miles), or Key West (160 miles), all easy drives with most RVs on RVezy. You can also head north to Cocoa Beach (210 miles), Orlando (235 miles), or up the Atlantic coast into Georgia. Travel into Canada or other U.S. states is generally allowed, just confirm with your host before booking. One important note: travel into Mexico is not covered and not permitted on RVezy rentals, so plan U.S. and Canadian routes only.
fla-keys.com/getting-here/What kind of fuel economy and budget should I plan for in a Surfside RV rental?
Budgeting fuel for your Surfside RV trip is straightforward once you know what to expect. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes 10 to 14 MPG, and large Class A rigs 7 to 10 MPG. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. South Florida gas prices typically run a bit above the national average, with stations around Aventura, North Miami Beach, and the Florida Turnpike service plazas being the most convenient for big rigs. A weeklong loop from Surfside to Key West and back (about 320 miles round trip) in a Class C will cost roughly $90 to $140 in fuel. Fill up before returning the RV to avoid host refueling fees.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Surfside?
For winter trips (December through April), book your campground 3 to 6 months ahead, South Florida sites fill fast with snowbirds. Florida State Parks like Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson and Oleta River release reservations up to 11 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and the popular waterfront sites go almost immediately. Private parks like Miami Everglades RV Resort and Hollywood KOA can usually be booked 1 to 2 months out in winter, and just a few weeks ahead in summer. Pro tip: if you strike out on a state park, set up alerts on the reservation site, cancellations happen daily and last-minute openings are common in the best campgrounds near Surfside.
floridastateparks.org/learn/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Surfside?
Surfside driving is manageable with a little planning. Collins Avenue (A1A) is the main north-south road through town, narrow with frequent pedestrians, so take it slow in larger RVs. I-95 and the Florida Turnpike move fast and are RV-friendly, but rush hours (7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m.) get heavy. Watch for the MacArthur, Julia Tuttle, and 79th Street Causeways, all have lower speed limits and crosswinds. Heat-related afternoon thunderstorms from June through September can dump heavy rain in minutes, so pull over and wait it out. Most Surfside-area bridges have clearances over 13 feet, well above standard RV height.
fl511.com/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Surfside?
Campgrounds near Surfside are well-equipped for full RV camping. Expect full hookups (30/50 amp electric, water, sewer) at private parks like Miami Everglades RV Resort, Hollywood KOA, and Larry and Penny Thompson Park, plus pools, laundry, Wi-Fi, and dump stations. Florida State Parks like Oleta River and Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson typically offer electric and water hookups, with central dump stations and potable water fill points. For potable water and dump stations between trips, most Pilot, Flying J, and Love's truck stops along the Florida Turnpike and I-95 corridor have RV facilities. Pro tip: arrive with full fresh water and empty tanks, then top off at your campground for an easy first night.
floridastateparks.org/things-to-do/campingWhat features and amenities come with a typical Surfside RV rental?

Expect a fully equipped kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, often a convection oven), a bathroom with shower and toilet, comfortable sleeping for 2 to 8, roof or dash air conditioning (essential here!), and seatbelted seats for travel. Most rigs include a TV, and many hosts offer Wi-Fi hotspots, outdoor speakers, beach chairs, and bikes as add-ons. Generators are standard on motorhomes for boondocking power. Campervan rental Surfside options are perfect for couples who want easier parking and better fuel economy. Check the listing's amenities list and message the host if you need anything specific like a portable BBQ or paddleboard.

RVezy hosts in Surfside offer add-ons that can transform your trip: linens and kitchen kits ($50 to $150), beach gear, generators, bike racks, BBQ grills, and even kayaks. Delivery to your address, hotel, or campground typically costs $2 to $4 per mile. Some hosts offer Instant Book for fast confirmation, filter for it if you're booking last-minute. Pickup is usually at the host's home or storage location in the greater Miami area, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough and orientation included. Want a one-way trip down to the Keys? Message the host directly from the listing, popular routes from Surfside include Key West, Naples, and Orlando.
miamidade.gov/global/transportation/home.pageHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your Surfside RV rental, RVezy charges your card for the trip total and holds funds until after your trip begins, so the host is paid only once you're safely on the road. A refundable security deposit (the amount is set per listing) is pre-authorized on your card before pickup, not actually charged. As long as you return the RV in the same condition with the agreed mileage and fuel, the hold is released after your trip ends. Pro tip: do a quick walk-around video at pickup and dropoff to document condition, it protects everyone.
