Campgrounds and RV parks near Crescent, GA

Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge is the headline outing: a 2,762-acre mosaic of salt marsh, woodland, freshwater ponds, and former cropland with a four-mile wildlife drive, several hiking trails, and a large wood stork nesting colony on Woody Pond. Birding is strongest from late February through summer nesting season, with painted buntings active in scrub habitat in late spring and summer. Sapelo Island, a state-protected barrier island reached only by the state-run passenger ferry from the Meridian dock, offers guided tours of the Reynolds Mansion, an 1820 lighthouse, Nanny Goat Beach, and the Gullah-Geechee community of Hog Hammock. The historic shrimping town of Darien, the Smallest Church in America at South Newport, and the beaches of St. Simons and Jekyll Islands are all within an hour's drive. On-water options include tidal-creek kayaking, inshore fishing, crabbing, and shrimping from campground docks.

Coastal McIntosh County has a humid subtropical climate, so the camping calendar is shaped more by heat, bugs, and storms than by cold. Spring, roughly March through May, is the prime window: mild days, lower humidity, active bird migration along the Atlantic Flyway, and wading-bird nesting in full swing at Harris Neck. Summer is hot and oppressively humid, with July highs averaging near 90°F and August producing the most rainfall of the year, often in afternoon thunderstorms. Mosquitoes, no-see-ums, and deer flies peak in the marshes. June through November is Atlantic hurricane season, with peak activity in August and September; coastal RV parks may close or evacuate ahead of named storms. Fall, especially mid-October into November, brings drier, cooler air and is a strong second-choice season. Winter is mild, with January highs in the low 60s and lows in the mid-40s, making it popular with snowbirds and long-term RVers, though some smaller parks reduce hours.

Expect small, quiet, often family-run parks rather than large resorts. Riverfront sites such as those at Belle Bluff Island Campground are partly shaded by live oaks draped in Spanish moss and sit directly on tidal water, with a floating dock for fishing, crabbing, and shrimping. Interstate-adjacent parks like McIntosh Lake RV Park typically offer 30 and 50 amp service, sewer, Wi-Fi, and easy in-and-out access for travelers passing through. Cell signal is generally usable along the I-95 corridor and patchier on the marsh edges. Bring strong insect repellent year-round; mosquito and gnat pressure depends heavily on wind. Swimming is in pools or at nearby ocean beaches rather than tidal rivers, where currents are strong. Grocery, fuel, and basic services cluster near I-95 exits 58 and 67.
