Campgrounds and RV parks near Midway, GA

Day trips split cleanly between coastal nature and colonial history. Fort Morris Historic Site preserves an earthen Revolutionary War fort overlooking St. Catherines Sound, and the Midway Museum and Midway Congregational Church tell the story of the town's 18th-century founding. Melon Bluff Nature Preserve offers marsh trails and paddling access. Families typically dedicate a day to Savannah's historic squares, River Street, and the Tybee Island beaches and lighthouse. Fort McAllister State Park adds trails, a Civil War earthwork fort, and boat ramps on the Ogeechee River. Wildlife viewing is strong at Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge, where a wildlife drive loops past freshwater pools known for wood storks and alligators. Anglers use public ramps at Sunbury and Yellow Bluff for inshore trips into St. Catherines and Sapelo sounds.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in coastal Georgia. March through May brings mild days and lower humidity, while October and November deliver drier, comfortable weather and thinner crowds after Labor Day. Sites at Fort McAllister State Park and popular private resorts book up quickly around spring break and holiday weekends. Summer is hot and humid, with heat indices routinely pushing above 100°F and near-daily afternoon thunderstorms. Biting insects, including no-see-ums and mosquitoes, peak in the marshes from May through September. Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, with the highest storm risk in August and September; travelers should monitor National Hurricane Center advisories. Winter is mild by RV-travel standards, with daytime highs generally in the low 60s and only occasional freezes. Many private parks stay open year-round, and the area draws a modest snowbird population, though some seasonal campground amenities such as pools may close from late fall through early spring.

Sites in this region are typically level, with a mix of pull-through and back-in options. Full hook-ups with 30/50-amp service are standard at larger parks such as Savannah South KOA Holiday and CreekFire Resort, while smaller properties may offer partial hook-ups only. Cell coverage is generally reliable along the I-95 corridor and can weaken on the barrier-island approaches. Expect sandy soil, plenty of Spanish moss, and shaded pine and live-oak canopies at many sites. Bring insect repellent, screen rooms, and sun protection; humidity stays high spring through fall. Roads into the coastal preserves are paved but narrow in spots, and low-clearance oaks can be a factor for taller Class A rigs. Confirm site length and access with the campground before arrival, especially for rigs over 35 feet.
