Camping near Atkins, Iowa
Atkins sits in Benton County in eastern Iowa, roughly fifteen minutes west of Cedar Rapids and within easy reach of the Cedar River corridor, the Amana Colonies, and several state recreation areas. The town works well as a quiet base for RV travellers exploring the region, with grocery, fuel, and dump station options along the U.S. 30 and I-380 corridors.
Campground choices range from a large state-managed lakeside park to full-hookup private RV parks. Pleasant Creek State Recreational Area is the closest public option, sitting on the shore of Pleasant Creek Lake north of Palo. Amana Colonies RV Park anchors the Amana villages to the south and caters to big rigs and rally groups. BEYONDER Getaway at Lazy Acres near Center Point and BEYONDER Getaway at Sleepy Hollow near Oxford add private, family-oriented options on either side of the metro.
Cam lo-Dis-E-Ca, a faith-based campground near Solon, rounds out the mix for travellers heading toward the Lake Macbride area.
Things to do near Atkins
Water activities dominate the area. Pleasant Creek Lake allows any size boat motor at no-wake speed, with boat ramps, a kayak launch, and a designated swimming beach. Anglers target muskellunge, channel catfish, largemouth bass, and white bass, and fishing jetties provide accessible shoreline spots.
A multi-use trail loops the lake for hikers and cyclists, and the recreation area is open to public hunting and trapping in season. South of Atkins, the seven historic villages of the Amana Colonies offer restaurants, shops, museums, and a trail linking the settlements. Families staying at BEYONDER Getaway at Lazy Acres also have on-site activities and playgrounds within the campground itself.

Camping in the Atkins area is strongly seasonal. At Pleasant Creek State Recreational Area, park staff generally turn water on and open shower buildings and dump stations in spring and start closing them in mid-October, weather depending. Frost-free hydrants may be available for shoulder-season camping, but campers should call the park to confirm.
Private parks follow a similar rhythm. Amana Colonies RV Park operates April through October, with staff available year-round for planning. BEYONDER Getaway at Sleepy Hollow lists year-round availability, which helps for early-spring or late-fall itineraries when state facilities are winterized.
Summer is peak season, with warm humid days, the region's wettest months, and the largest lineup of Amana Colonies festivals. Late September and October bring cooler nights, fall colour, and lighter crowds. Winter camping is limited and requires self-contained rigs since modern facilities close down.
How to book Atkins campgrounds
Iowa state parks, including Pleasant Creek State Recreational Area, use the Iowa DNR reservation system through ReserveAmerica. Sites and cabins can be booked online through the Iowa State Parks reservation portal or by phone. A refundable damage deposit is required for cabins in addition to the rental fee, and cancellations carry a fee plus forfeiture of one night if made close to arrival.
Private parks handle their own bookings. Amana Colonies RV Park takes reservations by phone and online, and summer weekends near festival dates fill early. BEYONDER properties book directly through the operator's website or by calling each location. Cam lo-Dis-E-Ca reservations run through the camp office for its warm-season operating window.
What to expect at Atkins campgrounds
Sites in the area vary widely. Pleasant Creek offers non-equestrian campgrounds with a mix of electric and non-electric sites, modern shower and restroom buildings, and a shared water and sewer station at the entrance rather than private hookups at each site. Cabins are basic but clean.
Private parks are set up for larger rigs. Amana Colonies RV Park spans 80 acres with over 450 sites, many full-hookup 50-amp sites on 75-foot pads, plus laundry, showers, a camp store, and a four-vehicle dump station. BEYONDER Getaway at Lazy Acres offers full-hookup sites, cabins, and family activities.
Emerald ash borer is present statewide, so campers should buy firewood locally rather than bringing it from home.
