Campgrounds near Bedford, Iowa
Bedford sits in Taylor County in southwest Iowa, roughly three miles from Lake of Three Fires State Park at 2303 Lake Road. The town serves as a practical base for a cluster of Iowa DNR state park campgrounds spread across the rolling farmland and oak-hickory timber of the region. RV travelers typically build trips around lake-oriented state parks, with a private hookup option a short drive away.
Lake of Three Fires State Park is the closest option and features two modern campgrounds a short distance from the 85-acre lake, with electric and non-electric sites, restrooms, showers, a trailer dump station, plus a separate equestrian campground. Viking Lake State Park lies to the west near Stanton and offers a shaded 120-site campground on the lakeshore, with a mix of electric, full-hookup, buddy, and non-electric sites.
Green Valley State Park sits east near Creston, Lake Anita State Park lies north near the town of Anita, and Eagle Ridge RV Park provides a private-park alternative for travelers who want longer-stay hookups outside the state system.
Things to do near Bedford
Fishing anchors most trips. Lake of Three Fires holds largemouth bass, catfish, crappie, and bluegill, and Viking Lake is stocked with bluegill, largemouth bass, redear sunfish, crappie, and channel catfish. Both lakes are restricted to no-wake speeds, which keeps the water calm for kayaks, canoes, and small craft.
Hikers have room to spread out. Lake of Three Fires offers more than 10 miles of multi-use trails winding around the lake and through wetlands and prairie, used by hikers, horseback riders, and snowmobilers in season. Viking Lake features a 5.5-mile multi-use loop around the lake and the one-mile Burr Oak Nature Trail.
Both parks have sandy swim beaches, playgrounds, and picnic shelters. In town, Bedford is known for its antique shops, and the Taylor County Historical Museum sits at the west edge of town.

The Iowa state park camping season follows a consistent pattern. At Lake of Three Fires, the campground is closed January 1 through March 31, off-peak in April, peak from May 1 through October 15, off-peak the second half of October, and closed November 1 through December 31. Nearby state park campgrounds follow the same general schedule, with modern facilities such as showers, water, and dump stations typically active from around May 1 through mid-October.
Summer is the busiest stretch. Warm weather, active fishing, and school-break traffic push weekend sites to fill early, especially around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. Shoulder months in late April, May, and September tend to have more open sites and cooler nights suited to RV travel.
Winter closes most campgrounds in this area, though six studio cabins with heat and air conditioning at Lake of Three Fires are available for reservations most of the year, apart from a mid-winter closure from January 15 through March 31.
How to book
State park campsites around Bedford are booked through the Iowa DNR reservation portal at iowastateparks.reserveamerica.com or by calling the reservation call center at 1-877-427-2757. The Lake of Three Fires campground is 100% reservable, and a reservation is required.
Standard campsite reservations can be made for today and up to 3 months in advance, opening at 7:00 AM Central Time. Cabins, lodges, and shelters use a longer 12-month window, so plan those bookings earlier in the year. Popular holiday weekends open at the three-month mark and often clear within minutes.
Eagle Ridge RV Park is a private operation and is booked directly with the campground rather than through the state system. Confirm rig-length limits, hookup type, and any minimum-stay requirements before you finalize a booking.
What to expect
Expect small, well-kept lake parks rather than resort-style destinations. Sites tend to be shaded and spaced under mature timber, with a mix of electric, full-hookup, and non-electric options. Modern restrooms, showers, and a trailer dump station are standard at the state park campgrounds around Bedford.
Cell coverage is inconsistent once you leave the highway, and grocery runs mean a short drive back into Bedford or a neighboring town. The town of Bedford offers basic amenities such as grocery stores and restaurants, so stock up before arrival if you have a large group.
Firewood rules matter: emerald ash borer has been confirmed in all 99 Iowa counties, so buy firewood locally near the park you are visiting and burn it all during your stay. Leashed pets are welcome in most areas, quiet hours are enforced, and the maximum stay is 14 consecutive nights.
