Campgrounds and RV parks near Clarinda, IA

Water recreation anchors most trips. At Viking Lake State Park, campers can use four boat ramps for lake access and fish six universally accessible fishing jetties for bluegill, redear sunfish, largemouth bass, channel catfish, crappie and walleye, plus swim at the sandy beach on the west shore. Lake Of Three Fires State Park offers a no-wake lake suited to kayaking and canoeing, a swimming beach, and an equestrian area for horse campers. Hikers have options at every park. The 5.5 mile multi-use trail around Viking Lake connects with the one-mile Burr Oak Nature Trail, and Main - Waubonsie State Park has an extensive trail system crossing ridgetop prairies and shaded woodland valleys with wide views over the Missouri River Valley. Schildberg Recreation Area Campground adds paved lake loops and playgrounds close to Atlantic's downtown.

Iowa's state park camping season is tightly bracketed. At Viking Lake State Park, the campground is closed January 1 to March 31, off peak April 1 to April 30, peak May 1 to October 15, and off peak October 16 to October 31, with a full winter closure from November through December. Lake Of Three Fires State Park follows a similar schedule. Main - Waubonsie State Park's modern campground is 100 percent reservable, and several Waubonsie cabins stay open year-round while others operate seasonally from mid-April into late fall. Late spring through early fall offers the most reliable weather and the fullest amenity set: open shower buildings, staffed beaches, and reservable shelters. Summer weekends and holiday periods book fastest, especially lakefront sites. Shoulder months bring cooler nights, fewer bugs, and better site availability. Fall colour through the Loess Hills and Taylor County timber typically peaks in mid to late October. Winter camping options are limited mostly to cabins and to year-round private and municipal parks.

State park loops in this part of Iowa mix electric and non-electric pads. Viking Lake State Park offers non-electric, electric, and full hook-up sites along with buddy sites, modern restrooms and showers, and a sanitary dump station, with over one hundred sites accommodating a range of tent and RV setups. Main - Waubonsie State Park's modern loop has both non-electric and electric sites, a dump station, and eight cabins; its equestrian loop uses pit vault toilets. Expect gravel or paved pads, picnic tables, and fire rings at most Iowa DNR sites. Cell service can be spotty near Lake Of Three Fires State Park and in the Loess Hills. Bring drinking water containers where hookups are limited, and confirm rig-length limits when reserving longer trailers or motorhomes.
