Campgrounds near Creston, Iowa
Creston sits in Union County in southwest Iowa, surrounded by a cluster of reservoir-based state parks that anchor most RV camping in the region. The closest is Green Valley State Park, about three miles north of town, built around Green Valley Lake and connected to Creston by a paved multi-use trail.
Within roughly an hour's drive, RV travelers can reach Lake Of Three Fires State Park near Bedford, Lake Anita State Park off Interstate 80 near Anita, and Shady Brook Camping and RV Adventures, LLC for private-campground amenities. Farther east near the Des Moines metro, Des Moines West KOA Holiday offers full-hookup RV sites and a resort-style setup useful as a stopover on longer routes.
Most public campgrounds in the area are managed by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and share a common reservation system, seasonal calendar, and cancellation rules, which makes trip planning across multiple parks straightforward.
Things to do around Creston
Fishing and boating drive most trips here. Green Valley State Park serves as a base for anglers working four area lakes: Three Mile, Twelve Mile, Summit, and Green Valley, all within about ten miles of each other, with restocked walleye, bass, crappie, bluegill, and channel catfish. Lake Anita and Lake Of Three Fires add no-wake boating, sandy swim beaches, and jetty fishing.
On land, Green Valley offers a paved 6.5-mile multi-use trail that links the campground through Mitchell Marsh to Creston and McKinley City Park. Lake Anita has a roughly four-mile paved loop circling the reservoir, and Lake Of Three Fires carries multi-use trails popular with hikers and horseback riders.

Iowa state park campgrounds around Creston follow a tight seasonal calendar. Green Valley and Lake Anita campgrounds are closed from November 1 through March 31, run off-peak in April, hit peak season from May 1 through October 15, then shift back to off-peak through the end of October before closing for winter. Lake Of Three Fires follows a similar pattern. Water lines, showers, and dump stations are typically turned on around May 1 and shut down by mid-October, so April and late-October stays may run without modern water service.
Peak demand runs Memorial Day through Labor Day, when lake beaches, Saturday movie nights at Lake Anita, and equestrian sites at Lake Of Three Fires fill quickly. Weekends and holidays book out well in advance.
Spring brings storm risk, including occasional tornado warnings, and waterfowl migration through wetlands like Mitchell Marsh at Green Valley. Fall is quieter, cooler, and generally the easiest time to secure a site.
How to book a site
State park sites at Green Valley, Lake Of Three Fires, and Lake Anita are booked through the Iowa State Parks reservation portal on ReserveAmerica. Campsites at all three parks accept reservations up to three months in advance, with same-day bookings accepted until 10:00 p.m. Central. Green Valley campground is 100 percent reservable.
Cabins, lodges, and shelters use longer windows: Iowa state park cabins are generally reservable up to twelve months ahead. Green Valley cabins are reservable from mid-April through mid-October online, with last-minute stays handled by the park office by phone.
Private options such as Shady Brook Camping and RV Adventures, LLC and Des Moines West KOA Holiday book directly through the operator or the KOA system.
What to expect on arrival
State park campgrounds in this part of Iowa are modern but rustic. Expect gravel pads with fire rings and picnic tables, electric and non-electric loops, and centralized shower and restroom buildings. Lake Anita adds full-hookup sites with water and sewer, plus a tiered layout with lake views. Green Valley has 145 sites with about 85 electric hookups and a trailer dump station.
Lake Anita is a no-wake lake with a five mile-per-hour speed limit, and swim beaches at these parks are unsupervised. Pets are allowed on six-foot leashes and cannot be left unattended.
Firewood should be purchased locally to limit the spread of emerald ash borer, confirmed in every Iowa county. Cell coverage is generally reliable near Creston but can thin out at more remote park loops.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Creston,IowaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Creston, IA?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Iowa, even for a Class C motorhome. There is no special RV endorsement or commercial license (CDL) required for the personal motorhomes and trailers listed on RVezy. You will need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy handles ID verification securely through the platform during booking. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home-country license along with an International Driving Permit (IDP) if your license is not in English. First-time renters are often surprised how quick the approval process is.

Yes, every RV rental in Creston booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the road with real peace of mind. You choose your level of coverage at checkout (not the host), and the plan helps cover physical damage to the RV during your trip. Review the plan details on RVezy before booking so you know exactly what is included.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Creston RV rental?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy applies a clear, standardized cancellation policy to every reservation, including a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refund amounts depend on how far out you are from your trip start date. Because RVezy (not the host) manages the cancellation policy, the process is consistent no matter which motorhome rental in Creston you choose. Pro tip: book early to secure the best RVs for Iowa State Fair week or Madison County's Covered Bridge Festival, and review the full policy on the RVezy Help Center before you book.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Creston, IA?
Absolutely, plenty of pet-friendly RV rentals in Creston welcome four-legged co-pilots. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see hosts who allow dogs (and sometimes cats), and check each listing for any pet fee or size limits. Once you're on the road, Green Valley State Park, McKinley Park, and the Summit Lake Wildlife Area all allow leashed pets on trails and at campsites. The shaded loop trail around Green Valley Lake is a favorite for morning walks. Pro tip: message the host before booking to mention your dog's size and breed, and they'll often share their favorite local pet spots too.
iowadnr.gov/places-to-go/state-parks/iowa-state-parks/green-valley-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Creston?
Yes, RV delivery in Creston is one of the easiest ways to skip the stress, especially if it's your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts offer to drive the rig to Green Valley State Park, McKinley Park Campground, or even a friend's driveway in town, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. Delivery fees are set per mile by each host and shown on the listing. Just use the Delivery filter when you search. Pro tip: delivery is a smart move for big trailers and fifth wheels, since you'll arrive to a fully set-up basecamp and head straight to Summit Lake to fish.
iowadnr.gov/places-to-go/state-parksHow does mileage work, and can I find an RV rental with unlimited mileage?
You've got options: some Creston hosts include a daily mileage allowance (often 100 to 150 free miles per day) with a small per-mile fee beyond that, and others offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is perfect for longer Iowa road trips. Each listing spells out the mileage policy clearly before you book. From Creston, you're 75 miles to Des Moines, 130 miles to Omaha, 200 miles to Kansas City, and about 240 miles to the Mississippi River at Davenport. Pro tip: if you're planning a multi-state loop, filter for unlimited mileage upfront so you can wander Iowa's backroads without watching the odometer.
iowadot.gov/mapsWhere are the best campgrounds near Creston, IA?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Creston. Green Valley State Park, just 3 miles north of town, has about 100 sites with 50-amp hookups, a swimming beach, and shoreline fishing on Green Valley Lake. McKinley Park Campground inside Creston offers 38 sites with 30-amp electric and water, right next to a city lake and playground. Twelve Mile Lake near Mount Ayr and Three Mile Lake near Afton add quiet, scenic options 20 to 30 minutes away. For full hookups and pull-throughs, Lakeside Casino Resort RV Park in Osceola is 30 minutes east. Pro tip: book Green Valley by early April for peak summer weekends.
iowadnr.gov/places-to-go/state-parks/iowa-state-parks/green-valley-state-parkWhen is the best time of year to plan an RV trip from Creston?
Late April through mid-October is prime time for a Creston RV trip, with June, July, and August delivering warm 75 to 88 F days perfect for swimming at Green Valley Lake. May and September are the local sweet spot: 60s to mid-70s, fewer bugs, and easier campground bookings. Fall color in southwest Iowa usually peaks in mid-October, when the rolling hills around Madison County's covered bridges glow gold and red. Winters are cold (often 20s F with snow), so most state-park campgrounds close by late October. Pro tip: time your visit to the Madison County Covered Bridge Festival on the second weekend of October, just 25 miles north in Winterset.
weather.gov/dmx/I've never rented an RV before, is renting in Creston beginner-friendly?
Creston is honestly one of the easier places in the country for a first time renting an RV. Traffic is light, roads are flat-to-rolling, and Green Valley State Park is just minutes from pickup, so you can practice short before any longer drive. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering the generator, slide-outs, water, propane, and dump procedure, and they're a text away during your trip. RVezy's customer support is also available 24/7. Pro tip: ask your host for a quick loop around the parking lot to practice mirrors and turning, then head straight to McKinley Park for an easy first night close to town.
nps.gov/articles/rv-camping-tips.htmWhat happens if I break down or have an issue on the road?
You are never on your own. Every RV rental in Creston booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. If something goes sideways on Highway 34 or out on a gravel county road, you call the roadside line and they dispatch help to your location. Your host is also reachable directly through the RVezy app for any quirks specific to their RV, and RVezy support has your back too. Pro tip: snap a photo of your propane and battery switches during the orientation, so if you call roadside help later, you can describe exactly what you are looking at.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Creston RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome, and a Creston RV trip is a fantastic launchpad for a multi-state loop. You can drive into Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin without any extra paperwork. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and your protection coverage, so confirm in writing through the RVezy message thread before booking if that is part of your plan. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Popular RV road trips from Creston include the Loess Hills Scenic Byway (about 90 miles west), the Black Hills of South Dakota (about 600 miles), and the Lake of the Ozarks (about 300 miles south).
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for around Creston?
Plan smart and fuel won't blow your budget. Class C motorhomes from Creston hosts typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon on Iowa's mostly flat highways, campervans (Class B) average 14 to 20 mpg, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 mpg). Iowa gas prices tend to run a bit below the national average, and there are plenty of stations along Highway 34 and I-80 with diesel and DEF. Pro tip: fuel up in Creston or Osceola before heading to Green Valley State Park, since pump options thin out on the rural county roads, and download GasBuddy to spot the cheapest stops on your route.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Creston?
For peak summer weekends, book your campsite as soon as you book your RV. Iowa State Parks like Green Valley open reservations 3 months ahead through the Iowa DNR reservation system (reservation window opens at 8:00 a.m. Central), and the lakeside sites at Green Valley fill within minutes for July 4 and Labor Day weekends. Midweek bookings and shoulder-season trips (May, September, early October) are much easier and you can often grab a site a few days out. McKinley Park Campground inside Creston is first-come-first-served, which is great for spontaneous trips. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for the exact 90-day mark to snag premium waterfront sites.
iowadnr.gov/places-to-go/state-parks/reservationsWhat are the driving conditions like around Creston?
Driving an RV around Creston is refreshingly low-stress. The town sits at the junction of US Highway 34 and Highway 25, both wide two-lane routes with gentle grades and plenty of shoulder, perfect for getting comfortable behind the wheel. I-80 is just 35 minutes north for faster east-west travel. Watch for gravel county roads if you're heading to smaller fishing spots; they're fine in dry weather but get slick after storms. Iowa summer thunderstorms can pop up fast, so check the forecast each morning. Pro tip: in winter, southwest Iowa can see ice storms, so most renters stick to the April-through-October window when roads are clear and the rolling farm country is at its prettiest.
hb.511ia.org/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Creston?
Local campgrounds make RV camping in Creston easy. Green Valley State Park has 50-amp electric sites, modern restrooms with showers, a dump station, potable water fill, a swimming beach, and a boat ramp. McKinley Park Campground offers 30-amp electric and water hookups, vault and flush toilets, and a dump station nearby in town. Lakeside Casino Resort RV Park in Osceola offers full hookups (water, sewer, 50-amp). Most Iowa state-park dump stations are free for registered campers. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving the campground, since fill stations are limited on the back roads, and pack a 25-foot drinking water hose in case the spigot is set back from your site.

Many also come with a TV, Bluetooth stereo, awning, and outdoor speakers; some have onboard generators or solar for off-grid stops at places like Three Mile Lake. Wi-Fi varies, so plan to use your phone hotspot if you need to work. Pro tip: check each listing's amenity list and message the host if you need specifics like a CPAP-friendly inverter or a kid-safe bunk ladder.
nhtsa.gov/equipment/seat-beltsWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for my Creston RV rental?

Common add-ons include camping chairs and tables, bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, bikes, kayaks, generators, propane fills, and pet packages, all shown with clear pricing on the listing. Pickup is usually at the host's location around the Creston area, and many will deliver to Green Valley State Park or other regional campgrounds for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies and return times are clearly listed too. Pro tip: if you're planning a Madison County Covered Bridge Festival trip, filter for Festival-Friendly hosts and ask about a generator add-on, which keeps the AC running when you're parked in a no-hookup field.
madisoncounty.iowa.gov/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy at the time of booking using a credit card, and your funds are held safely by RVezy, so money never goes directly to a stranger. The security deposit is separate from your booking payment and is pre-authorized (not charged) on your card around pickup, then released after a smooth return, typically within a few days. Avoid issues by completing the pre-trip walkthrough, photographing the RV inside and out, and returning it with the same fuel level and in clean condition. Pro tip: review the host's mileage, generator, and cleaning policies in the listing before pickup so there are zero surprises at drop-off.
