Campgrounds and RV parks near Elgin, IA

Volga River State Recreation Area has more than 20 miles of multi-use trails used by hikers, mountain bikers, equestrians, snowmobilers, and cross-country skiers. The park is open to public hunting in season, and Frog Hollow Lake holds bluegill, crappie, ringed perch, and largemouth bass. On-water activity centers on the Turkey and Volga rivers: paddling, tubing, and trout fishing. Skip-A-Way Resort has a swim beach and river access on the Turkey River. Spook Cave & Campground offers guided boat tours into a flooded cave, plus a trout stream, waterfall, and Spook Cave Lake for fishing and swimming. Day trips reach Pikes Peak State Park on the Mississippi bluffs, Effigy Mounds National Monument, and the shops of downtown Elkader and McGregor.

Northeast Iowa has a short, busy camping season. Most private parks around Elgin operate roughly mid-April through October, with Spook Cave & Campground open May 1 through October 31. Cabins and cave tours at Spook Cave run May through October as well. At Volga River State Recreation Area, the Lakeview Campground is closed November 16 through March 31, with peak season May 1 to October 15 and shoulder off-peak windows on either side. The Albany equestrian and non-equestrian loops are reservable year-round. Park staff generally turn water on and open shower buildings and dump stations by May 1, and start shutting them down around mid-October. Frost-free hydrants may remain available for off-season camping, but modern facilities are not guaranteed in April or later October, so travelers should call the park to confirm. Summer weekends draw heavy demand: sites at popular private resorts and Lakeview fill early, and fall foliage in late September and October is a second peak. Winter is quiet, with Volga River's trails groomed for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.

This is Driftless country, so expect winding two-lane roads, steep grades in and out of river valleys, and limited cell coverage in some hollows. GPS routing to rural campgrounds is not always reliable; travelers should watch for posted directions from each operator. Hookup availability varies. Spook Cave has 72 sites with a 50-foot rig limit and a mix of full, electric-water, and electric-only hookups, with 30 and 50 amp service. Volga River's Lakeview has modern electric and full-hookup sites with showers and a dump station; the Albany loop is non-modern with vault toilets, a water hydrant, and no showers. Wildlife is common: white-tailed deer, wild turkey, bald eagles, red fox, and beaver. Trout fishing is a regional draw, and mosquitoes and ticks are active from late spring through early fall.
