Campgrounds near Essex, Iowa
Essex sits in Page County in southwest Iowa, within a short drive of two Iowa state parks and the Missouri River corridor. The area suits RV travellers who want lake camping, Loess Hills scenery, and easy interstate access without the crowds of a major destination.
Viking Lake State Park, northeast of Essex near Stanton, is one of the region's most popular campgrounds, built around a 136-acre lake with electric and full-hookup sites, modern showers, and a sanitary dump station. Main - Waubonsie State Park, southwest of Essex near Hamburg, sits in the Loess Hills and offers a modern campground plus a separate equestrian campground, with cabins available for a longer season.
Closer to town and to I-29, All American Campground and RV Park and I-29 Hwy 34 Campground work well for overnight stops and shorter stays. West across the Missouri River, Lewis and Clark/Brownville State Recreation Area on the Nebraska side adds a river-adjacent option under the Nebraska Game and Parks system.
Things to do near Essex
At Viking Lake State Park, campers can fish for bluegill, redear sunfish, largemouth bass, crappie, walleye, and channel catfish from six accessible jetties, launch small boats at no-wake speeds, or swim at the sandy beach on the west shore. A 5.5-mile multi-use trail loops the lake, and a shorter Burr Oak Nature Trail suits families with younger kids.
Main - Waubonsie State Park is the local hub for hiking and horseback riding, with ridgetop prairie and shaded valley trails through the Loess Hills and overlooks toward the Nebraska plains. The Steamboat Trace Trail near Brownville follows a former rail corridor along the Missouri River and is popular for hiking and biking. Nearby small towns add farm stands, museums, and, in July, the long-running outdoor rodeo at Sidney.

The Iowa state park camping season runs primarily from spring through late fall. At Viking Lake State Park, the campground is closed January through March, with off-peak shoulders in April and the second half of October, and peak season running May through mid-October. Main - Waubonsie State Park keeps its modern campground open into the cooler months, and select cabins there stay reservable into late November.
Late spring and early summer bring wildflowers in the Loess Hills and comfortable lake temperatures. July and August are the busiest months, and severe thunderstorms are common across southwest Iowa during summer. Fall delivers cooler nights, thinner crowds, and strong colour in the hardwood ridges at Waubonsie.
Winter closes most campground loops and shower buildings. Some year-round cabins and lodges remain reservable, but RV travellers planning a December through February trip should confirm site availability, water service, and road access with the park before booking.
How to book Essex-area campsites
Iowa state park sites at Viking Lake and Waubonsie are booked through the Iowa DNR reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Standard campsites can be reserved up to three months in advance, while cabins, lodges, and shelters can be booked up to twelve months out. Both Iowa parks list their campgrounds as fully reservable.
Lewis and Clark/Brownville State Recreation Area is booked through the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission reservation system, which accepts camping reservations up to 180 days in advance. Private options such as All American Campground and RV Park and I-29 Hwy 34 Campground take direct reservations through the operators. For summer weekends and holidays, book several weeks ahead and check park alerts for shower-building status before arrival.
What to expect at Essex-area campgrounds
Viking Lake State Park offers electric and full-hookup sites suited to RVs up to about 35 feet, with modern restrooms, showers, a dump station, and a playground in the campground. Several sites back to the lakeshore. The lake is no-wake, and personal watercraft are not permitted.
Main - Waubonsie State Park's modern loop has electric and nonelectric sites with showers and a dump station, while the equestrian loop uses pit vault toilets and hitching rails. Sites can feel close together, so shade and privacy vary by loop. Cell coverage is generally reliable near the interstates and thinner in the Loess Hills.
RV travellers should arrive with fresh water topped up, plan for gravel park roads, and pack for mosquitoes near the lake in summer. Firewood should be bought locally to limit the spread of tree pests.
