Campgrounds near Fayette, Iowa
Fayette sits in northeast Iowa's rugged landscape, a region locally called "Little Switzerland" for its bluffs, wooded valleys, and steel-bridge river crossings. The town anchors a compact cluster of camping options within a short drive, ranging from a large state recreation area to family resort campgrounds along nearby rivers.
The nearest public land is Volga River State Recreation Area, a 5,700-acre park immediately north of Fayette off Ivy Road. Its Lakeview Campground sits near Frog Hollow Lake and offers modern facilities suited to RVs, while the more primitive Albany Campground handles equestrian and non-electric camping. About 30 miles south, Backbone State Park, Iowa's first state park, adds a second major public option with the modern South Lake Campground on Backbone Lake.
Private campgrounds fill in the shorter-stay and full-hookup end. Skip-A-Way Resort, Lakeshore RV Resort and Campground, and Morwood Campground and Resort give RV renters more amenity-heavy alternatives when state park sites fill up.
Things to do near Fayette
Water recreation centers on Frog Hollow Lake at Volga River State Recreation Area and Backbone Lake at Backbone State Park. Frog Hollow is a 138-acre lake with bluegill, crappie, largemouth bass, and channel catfish, a three-lane boat ramp, and universally accessible fishing access; motors run at no-wake speeds only and swimming is not allowed. Backbone Lake permits only electric trolling motors and has a swimming beach, boathouse, and concession stand near the southeast end of the lake.
Trails are the other draw. Volga River offers more than 20 miles of multi-use trails groomed for equestrian riders, mountain bikers, snowmobilers, and cross-country skiers depending on the season. Backbone adds a 21-mile trail system with rocky staircases, twisted cedars, and dolomite limestone cliffs used by rock climbers and rappellers.
Backbone is also known for exceptional trout fishing on a cold, clear stream fed by Richmond Springs, which pumps more than 2,000 gallons per minute near the north end of the park.

Camping season in northeast Iowa is tightly bracketed by winter. At Volga River, the Lakeview campground is closed January 1 through March 31, peak season runs May 1 through October 15, with off-peak operation in April and the second half of October before another closure from November 1 through December 31. Backbone State Park's South Lake Campground is closed January 1 through March 31 and again December 1 through December 31, with an exception for the two youth group sites in South Lake, which accept reservations year round.
Water and showers follow a similar rhythm. Iowa DNR staff generally turn water on and open shower buildings and dump stations by May 1, then start closing them around mid-October depending on weather. Frost-free hydrants may be available for off-season camping, but modern facilities are not guaranteed in April or later October.
Private resorts run a comparable season. Summer weekends book heavily; midweek visits and mid-May or late-September trips see thinner crowds and cooler nights.
Booking a campsite near Fayette
Iowa state park sites are reserved through the state's online reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Advance campsite reservations at Volga River State Recreation Area go through the online system, and the campground is 100 percent reservable with a reservation required. Backbone State Park campsites and year-round cabins are also handled through the online reservation system, and the campgrounds are 100 percent reservable. The camping reservation window opens three months ahead and stays open up to the same day until 10 pm CST.
Standard Iowa DNR cancellation rules apply: a cancellation fee is charged for every cancellation, cancellations the day before arrival forfeit one night's camping fee plus the cancellation fee, and cancellations on the arrival date forfeit two nights plus the fee.
Private campgrounds like Skip-A-Way Resort, Lakeshore RV Resort and Campground, and Morwood Campground and Resort book directly through their own offices.
What to expect at Fayette campgrounds
Sites vary in hookup level. Lakeview Campground at Volga River has modern showers, restrooms, and a sanitary dump station, with sites offering electricity and water or full hookup electric, water, and sewer. South Lake at Backbone provides 49 electric sites, 49 non-electric sites, a dump station, two shower buildings, and a playground. Skip-A-Way Resort, Lakeshore RV Resort and Campground, and Morwood Campground and Resort round out the amenity-heavy private options.
A few practical notes for RV renters: emerald ash borer has been confirmed in Iowa and the state is under firewood transport quarantines, so it is a violation to move firewood from a quarantined area into a non-quarantined area. Buy firewood locally. Pets cannot be left unattended, cannot run at large, and must stay on a leash no longer than 6 feet.
