Campgrounds near Glenwood, Iowa
Glenwood sits in Mills County in southwest Iowa, just east of the Missouri River and within a short drive of the Omaha and Council Bluffs metro area. The town is a practical base for RV travelers because it puts interstate access, riverfront recreation, and the Loess Hills landform all within roughly an hour's radius.
Close-in options run from full-service commercial parks to state-managed campgrounds. I-29 Hwy 34 Campground offers a straightforward highway stop, while Bluffs Run RV Park at Horseshoe Casino provides a hookup-oriented site near the casino complex in Council Bluffs. Riverview Marina State Recreation Area, across the river in Nebraska City, adds Missouri River access with electric pad sites and primitive non-pad sites.
For a more rustic setting, Main - Waubonsie State Park is south of Glenwood in the Loess Hills, and Victorian Acres RV Park and Campgrounds near Nebraska City rounds out the options with a more traditional private-park layout. Together these campgrounds cover most RV needs, from overnight interstate stops to multi-night stays with hiking and river access nearby.
Things to do near Glenwood
The Loess Hills are the defining natural feature of the area. Waubonsie State Park is a site on the Lewis and Clark Historic Trail and is known for exceptional vistas of Iowa's unique Loess Hills and the Nebraska plains. Its extensive trail system serves mountain bikers, equestrians, and hikers through ridgetop prairies and shaded woodland valleys, with nearly 2,000 acres of recreational ground to explore.
Water-based activities cluster along the Missouri River corridor. Riverview Marina State Recreation Area offers access to the Missouri River with fishing for channel catfish, flathead catfish, blue catfish, and shovelnose sturgeon, and it has two boat ramps and a dock that accommodate all types of boats.
Glenwood itself offers small-town dining, and the Council Bluffs and Omaha metro area is close for shopping, the Henry Doorly Zoo, and river-walk attractions.

December - February
34° / 16°F 25 mmCold and snowy; Iowa state park campgrounds closed
The Glenwood area has a humid continental climate with a clearly defined camping season. At Waubonsie State Park, the main and equestrian campgrounds are closed from January through March, off-peak in April, peak from May through mid-October, off-peak in the second half of October, and closed from November through December. This calendar is typical of most Iowa DNR-managed campgrounds in the region.
Spring brings mild temperatures and the wettest stretch of the year, with strong thunderstorms possible. Summer is warm to hot and humid and marks peak demand at electric sites. Reservations are highly recommended because the campground, especially the electric sites, often fills up quickly during peak seasons. Fall cools quickly through September and October, offering strong hiking conditions in the Loess Hills before facilities begin to close.
Winter camping options are limited. Most Iowa state park campgrounds shut down from November 1 through March 31, and travelers who visit in this window generally rely on private RV parks with year-round hookups, such as those in the Council Bluffs area.
Booking and how to reserve
Iowa state park sites, including Main - Waubonsie State Park, are booked through the Iowa DNR reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Campsite reservations can be made 3 months in advance of the arrival date, up to the day of arrival when paying by credit card. Cabins and lodges at Waubonsie can be reserved up to 12 months in advance, with individual cabins following separate seasonal windows.
Riverview Marina State Recreation Area in Nebraska operates differently. All camping there is first-come, first-served, with nightly fees registered in a self-service Iron Ranger that accepts cash or checks only. A Nebraska park entry permit is required and can be purchased at the park, at Game and Parks offices, or online in advance.
Private parks like Bluffs Run RV Park at Horseshoe Casino, Victorian Acres RV Park and Campgrounds, and I-29 Hwy 34 Campground handle bookings directly through their own websites or by phone.
What to expect
Expect a mix of highway-convenient parks and more rustic state-run campgrounds. Private parks in the Council Bluffs corridor tend to offer full hookups, pull-through sites, and paved interior roads suitable for larger rigs. State areas trade some of that polish for scenery and space.
At Waubonsie, the modern campground has non-electric and electric sites, modern showers, restrooms, and a sanitary dump station, while the equestrian campground is more primitive with non-electric sites, hitching rails, pens, and pit vault toilets. The layout places most sites close to the internal roads, creating a compact feel that some reviewers note lacks privacy between neighboring spots.
Plan ahead on firewood. Emerald ash borer has been confirmed in all 99 Iowa counties, and while the federal EAB quarantine has been lifted, Iowa DNR and Iowa State University Extension continue to recommend that campers buy firewood locally and burn it on site rather than transporting it between counties.

Iowa typically has some of the more affordable gas prices in the Midwest, which keeps fuel costs reasonable on an RV road trip from Glenwood. Expect Class C motorhomes to get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class B campervans 16 to 20 MPG, and tow vehicles pulling a travel trailer around 10 to 14 MPG. With regular unleaded usually running near or below the national average in southwest Iowa, a weekend trip to Lake Manawa or Wilson Island won't break the bank. Pro tip: fuel up at Casey's just off I-29 in Glenwood before heading out, prices are usually lower than at the stations closer to Omaha's Eppley Airfield.

Watch for spring thunderstorms (March to June) and occasional summer flash flooding near the Missouri River bottoms.
