Campgrounds near Glidden, Iowa
Glidden sits in west-central Iowa's Carroll County, along U.S. Highway 30 and the Middle Raccoon River corridor. The area is farmland and river valley, with public camping concentrated at nearby conservation lands and Iowa state parks rather than in town.
The closest developed RV camping is at Whiterock Conservancy, a non-profit land trust south of Coon Rapids that balances regenerative agriculture, ecological restoration, and outdoor recreation. Whiterock Conservancy - Oak Ridge RV Campground offers 14 electric hookup sites with gravel pads, fire rings, a dump station, and a shower house, and Whiterock Conservancy - River CG provides riverside primitive sites along the Middle Raccoon.
Within about an hour's drive, three Iowa Department of Natural Resources state parks round out the options: Springbrook State Park to the southeast, Black Hawk State Park to the northwest on Black Hawk Lake near Lake View, and Lake Anita State Park further south in Cass County. All three offer a mix of electric and non-electric sites suitable for RV travelers.
Things to do around Glidden
Water recreation drives most trips. Black Hawk State Park sits on a 957-acre natural glacial lake with no motor size restrictions, three boat ramps, and swimming access, and the 33-mile Sauk Rail Trail runs from near the park to Swan Lake State Park in Carroll County. Lake Anita State Park centers on a reservoir with a swim beach, boat ramp, and shoreline trails. Springbrook State Park has a spring-fed lake with a sand beach and river access on the Middle Raccoon.
On land, Whiterock Conservancy offers roughly 40 miles of multi-use trails, with about 20 miles designated for equestrian use, plus horse pens at Oak Ridge for riders trailering in. Springbrook adds hiking through timber and prairie.

The main camping season runs from April through October. Iowa DNR generally has water systems, shower buildings, and dump stations turned on by May 1 and starts closing them around mid-October depending on weather, so April and late-October trips may find modern facilities unavailable. From November 1 through March 31, Iowa state park campsites are walk-in only, with advance reservations not accepted in most parks due to unpredictable winter weather.
Summer weekends fill quickly, especially around holidays and the Lake View Water Carnival at Black Hawk, held the third weekend in July. Late spring and early fall bring cooler nights, thinner crowds, and easier site selection.
Whiterock Conservancy campgrounds are open year-round, giving RV travelers a rare cold-season option in the area, though comfort drops sharply once temperatures fall.
How to book campgrounds near Glidden
Iowa state park sites at Black Hawk, Springbrook, and Lake Anita are reserved through the Iowa DNR system on ReserveAmerica at iowastateparks.reserveamerica.com or by phone. Reservations open up to three months in advance, and the last day to reserve online with a credit or debit card is two days before arrival. From November through March, advance reservations are not available at most Iowa state parks and all camping is walk-in.
Whiterock Conservancy sites at Oak Ridge and River CG are booked directly on the Whiterock Conservancy website. Firewood can be added to the reservation ahead of time, and out-of-state firewood is not allowed at Whiterock to limit the spread of emerald ash borer.
What to expect near Glidden
Expect quiet, rural surroundings and short drives between towns. Cell coverage is inconsistent in river valleys, so plan navigation and grocery stops before pulling into the park.
Sites vary in surface and length. Oak Ridge has gravel pads with electric hookups, three water hydrants, a central dump station, and a two-room shower house. Iowa state park loops mix electric, electric-with-water, and non-electric sites, with modern restrooms and showers during the warm season. Walk-in campers may occupy unrented reservable sites at Iowa DNR parks starting at 10:00 a.m., registering night to night.
Quiet hours are enforced, and Iowa DNR requires pets to be leashed and not left unattended.
