Campgrounds and RV parks near Griswold, IA

Water recreation drives most trips. Lake Anita holds largemouth bass, channel catfish, crappie, bluegill, redear sunfish and walleye, with jetties for shoreline fishing. Prairie Rose offers bass, channel catfish, bluegill and crappie, with eight fishing jetties and two fish cleaning docks. Viking Lake adds a sandy swim beach and a boat concession near the lodge. Trail users have options at every park. Lake Anita State Park has a paved four and three-eighths mile multi-use trail that runs completely around the lake through restored prairie and early successional timber. Viking Lake includes about 5.5 miles of multi-use trail around the lake plus a shorter interpretive nature trail. Prairie Rose has roughly seven miles of multi-use trails through restored prairie. Rainy-day stops in the area include the Danish Windmill in Elk Horn and small-town museums in Red Oak and Stanton.

The Iowa state park camping season runs a tight calendar. At Prairie Rose, Viking Lake, and Lake Anita the campgrounds are closed from November 1 through March 31, with the peak operating window from May 1 through October 15 and shoulder off-peak periods in April and the second half of October. Each of these parks is 100 percent reservable and accepts reservations April 1 through October 31 until 10:00 pm CST the day of arrival. Shoulder-season campers should plan for reduced services. Water and shower buildings generally come online near the start of the peak window and start closing around mid-October depending on weather, so campers interested in April or late October should call the park office to confirm frost-free hydrant availability and open bathhouses. Summer is peak. Sites at the popular state parks book weeks out for holiday weekends, and thunderstorms with occasional tornado watches are common from late spring through August. Fall brings cooler nights, fewer crowds, and good fishing before the November shutdown.

Expect open, rolling terrain with grassy hillsides, scattered timber, and lakeside loops rather than dense forest. Lake Anita State Park Campground wraps around a 171-acre lake just off Interstate 80, with sites positioned at different elevations on tiered terrain and the outer loop closest to the shoreline. At Prairie Rose the East Campground is the main RV area with full and electric hookups, a modern shower building and dump station, while the West Campground skews toward tents with non-electric and electric sites and non-modern restrooms. Viking Lake has a large lakeside campground with a mix of non-electric, electric, buddy, and full hook-up sites, plus modern restrooms, showers, and a trailer dump station. Cell coverage in the area is generally usable on major carriers, though some lakeside sites at Viking Lake report weaker signal. Firewood rules are strict statewide. Emerald ash borer has been confirmed across Iowa, and campers are asked to buy firewood locally near the park and burn it all during the stay.
