Campgrounds and RV parks near Hartford, IA

The Dutch community of Pella, ten miles northeast of Elk Rock, has many shops and attractions and celebrates its heritage with an annual Tulip Festival. Knoxville is home to the Knoxville Raceway and Newton is home to the Iowa Speedway, both of which hold racing events throughout the year. Families staying near Altoona can walk to Adventureland's rides and water park from Adventureland Campground. Outdoor recreation centres on Lake Red Rock, Iowa's largest body of water, reached from Elk Rock State Park. Anglers fish for catfish, bass, and crappies, and the park offers hiking and equestrian trails, a dedicated equestrian campground, and access to the paved Volksweg Trail for biking. At Walnut Woods State Park, the grounds encompass 260 acres of wooded bottom land along the Raccoon River, with fishing, floating, hiking, and river access from a boat ramp on the west end of the park.

The core RV season in central Iowa runs from late April through October. Summers are hot and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and shoulder months bring milder temperatures with a higher chance of rain. Fall foliage typically peaks in mid to late October along wooded river corridors. Summer weekends fill fast. Reservations are strongly recommended, especially during summer months when only a few unreserved sites typically remain available at Walnut Woods. Adventureland Campground follows the amusement park schedule, with an operating window of roughly April through October, and private parks near Altoona see peak demand during Iowa State Fair week in August and race weekends in Knoxville and Newton. Winters are cold and snowy. Most private campgrounds close for the season, and state-park campgrounds reduce services. Walnut Woods is 100 percent reservable and the campground accepts reservations year round, though freezing temperatures limit full-hookup water service between December and February.

State-park sites in the area lean toward paved or gravel pads with electric service. Walnut Woods has modern restrooms and a sanitary dump station but no showers, and the shady campsites have concrete pads and electrical service or full hook-ups with electric, water, and sewer. Campers who want showers may prefer Elk Rock or a private park. Adventureland Campground offers full-service RV sites with 30/50-amp electric plus water and sewer, along with a swimming pool and modern shower and restroom facilities. Sites are close together and the park operates alongside the amusement park, so expect a lively family atmosphere in summer. To prevent the spread of invasive species, campers are advised to obtain firewood locally rather than bringing it from other areas, as the entire state of Iowa is under federal firewood transport quarantines for emerald ash borer. Cell coverage is generally reliable across the Des Moines metro and along Lake Red Rock, and grocery stores, propane, and dump stations are easy to find in Altoona, West Des Moines, and Knoxville.
