The camping calendar in eastern Iowa is tied to the Iowa DNR season. Palisades-Kepler State Park and Lake Macbride State Park both accept reservations April 1 through November 15 and are closed November 16 through March 31. From November 1 through March 31, most other Iowa state park campsites are walk-in only, since advance reservations are paused for unpredictable winter weather. Late spring and summer bring the busiest bookings, especially around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day, when lakeside sites and family cabins fill weeks in advance. Cabins at Palisades-Kepler are reservable April 15 through October 15, with weekly rentals in summer and two-night minimums in spring and fall. Park staff typically have water, showers, and dump stations open from around May 1 through mid-October, so early-April and late-October stays may lack modern facilities. September and early October are the quietest good-weather windows, with cooler nights, fewer bugs, and fall color along the river bluffs.

State park campgrounds in this part of Iowa generally offer electric hookups, modern shower and restroom buildings, and a trailer dump station. Lake Macbride's modern north campground also has 11 full-hookup sites with water and sewer that can accommodate RVs up to 60 feet, while the southern unit is non-electric and tent-oriented. Primitive - Lake Macbride State Park lives up to its name with basic, non-electric setups. Sites at Palisades-Kepler are wooded and can feel close together on busy weekends. All of Iowa is under state and federal emerald ash borer firewood-transport quarantines, so buy firewood locally rather than moving it across county or state lines. Expect summer humidity, mosquitoes near the water, and quiet-hours enforcement at state parks.
