Campgrounds and RV parks near Holstein, IA

Water recreation is the main draw. The 957-acre natural Black Hawk Lake has no motor size restrictions and is a boating or fishing enthusiast's destination, and anglers target channel catfish, bluegill, and sunfish from the shoreline and fishing piers. Two swimming beaches operate in summer near the state park. On land, the Loess Hills west of Holstein offer hiking, wildlife viewing, and scenic driving loops through some of the tallest loess formations in North America. The Sauk Trail is excellent for biking, hiking, or in-line skating and is open for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing in the winter. Family-friendly local events include the Lake View Water Carnival, held the third weekend in July, with free entertainment, carnival rides, a street parade, and a water parade.

The main camping season in northwest Iowa runs from spring through mid-fall. Park staff generally try to have the water on and shower buildings and dump stations open by May 1, and start closing down shower buildings and turning off water and dump stations around mid-October depending on the weather. If campers are interested in camping in April or later in October, there is no guarantee modern facilities will be available. Summer is the busiest window, with lakeside sites at Black Hawk booking well in advance around holiday weekends and the July water carnival. Spring and early fall bring lighter crowds, cooler nights, and reliable fishing, though modern facilities may not yet be running in April or after mid-October. Winter camping is limited. Modern conveniences such as water, flush toilets, and shower buildings are closed during the winter months, though frost-free hydrants may be available at some sites, so campers should call ahead to confirm.

Expect a mix of state park and private-park experiences. State-park campgrounds at Black Hawk offer electric and non-electric sites, modern restrooms and showers in season, and lake access, but sites can be tight for larger RVs, so length and hookup type should be verified on the reservation map before booking. Private parks along the corridor, such as Onawa / Blue Lake KOA Holiday and Loess Hills Hideaway Cabins and Campground, generally offer longer pull-through sites, full hookups, and family amenities. Cell service is reliable in town but can drop in the Loess Hills. Campers are not allowed to leave pets unattended in the campground, pets are not allowed to run at large, and all animals shall be kept on a leash not to exceed 6 feet in length. Emerald ash borer has been confirmed in all 99 counties in Iowa; buy firewood locally near the park and burn it all during the stay.
