Campgrounds and RV parks near Lamoni, IA

Most outdoor activity centres on Nine Eagles State Park. The park offers 9 miles of hiking trails through forest and prairie landscapes, including a 3-mile trail around the lake, plus a 7-mile horse trail that is open to snowmobiles in the winter, and a beach with a boat ramp, jetty, and five smaller docks. Anglers can fish for bass, channel catfish, bluegill and more on the 64-acre lake, though only rowboats and electric motors are permitted. Off the trails, families can add a day trip up I-35 to Osceola, where the Lakeside resort features on-site gaming and entertainment, plus a swimming pool, fishing, hiking, and a general store. Lamoni itself is home to Graceland University and offers small-town dining, groceries, and fuel close to the interstate.

Southern Iowa has four distinct seasons. Lamoni has a humid continental climate marked by a very large seasonal temperature contrast: summers are warm and humid and bring the wettest conditions, while winters are cold with regular snowfall. Precipitation is spread fairly evenly through the year, with winter moisture often arriving as snow. The main state-park camping window is narrow. The Nine Eagles campground is closed each year from November 1 to March 31, and when open it is 100 percent reservable and accepts reservations April 1 through October 31 until 10:00 pm CST the day of arrival. The park itself remains open year-round for day use, with peak camping running May through September. Private parks along I-35 tend to stay open later into the shoulder season. At Lakeside in Osceola, for example, the main water is shut off for winter starting December 1, though potable water remains accessible at the north end of the park. Spring and early summer bring the heaviest rain, so travellers should watch for thunderstorms.

Sites around Lamoni skew small and rural. Nine Eagles has 3 campgrounds with 68 campsites (28 with electrical hookups), modern showers, restrooms and a trailer dump station. Parking pads are gravel, so leveling may be required upon arrival, the park has both back-in and pull-through sites, and RVs and trailers up to 76 feet can be accommodated, though the pads are narrow. Full-hookup expectations are best set at the private parks. Lakeside Casino Resort RV Park offers fully equipped sites with water, sewer, and 30/50 amp electrical hookups, and the interstate parks add large pull-through pads. Cell coverage along I-35 is generally strong; expect it to weaken inside the wooded valleys at Nine Eagles.
