Campgrounds and RV parks near Laurens, IA

The area's biggest draw is water. Five Island Lake at Emmetsburg, Storm Lake to the southwest, and the chain of Iowa Great Lakes near Arnolds Park all offer boating, fishing, swimming, and public beaches within an hour's drive of Laurens. Fieldstone RV Park sits within walking distance of Minnewashta Lake and near Arnolds Park Amusement Park and championship golf courses, which makes it a natural choice for families. West Bend's Grotto of the Redemption, a large folk-art shrine, is a short walk from The Grotto of the Redemption RV Park. Fort Defiance features over five miles of multi-use trails through hills and woodlands, with boat-ramp access to the West Fork of the Des Moines River nearby. In Laurens itself, Sportsman's Park has a fishing pond, disc golf, playground, and a trailhead for local prairie walks.

Northwest Iowa has a short but reliable camping season. Most private parks in the area operate from spring through fall: The Grotto of the Redemption RV Park runs roughly April through October, and Fieldstone RV Park operates as a seasonal park from mid-May through mid-October with 200 deluxe full-hookup sites. Wild Rose Casino and Resort's RV sites are generally available in the warmer months, subject to weather. State-park camping follows the Iowa DNR calendar. Park staff generally try to have water on and shower buildings and dump stations open by May 1, and start closing them around mid-October depending on weather. Fort Defiance Campground is closed January 1 through March 31 and November 16 through December 31, with peak season from May 1 to October 15. The campground is non-modern with a pit latrine and no showers. July is the warmest month and the peak booking window for lake-country parks. Late spring and early fall bring cooler nights, thinner crowds, and better trail conditions. Winter camping is limited, and modern amenities are not guaranteed outside the May-to-October window.

This is small-town, rural Iowa. Cell coverage is generally solid along the highways but can drop in wooded state parks. Grocery runs, fuel, and RV supplies are easiest in Emmetsburg, Storm Lake, Spencer, or Algona. Site quality varies widely. Fieldstone RV Park offers full hookups including water, sewer, and individual electric meters with 30-amp and 50-amp service, plus showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Wild Rose Casino and Resort provides full-service RV sites with a bathhouse and dump station. Fort Defiance is the most rustic option, with dirt sites, permanent fire rings, a single water spigot, and a pit latrine, though electrical hookups are available at eight sites. Expect flat terrain, big skies, mosquitoes near water in mid-summer, and quiet nights outside of the lake-country hot spots.
