Campgrounds near Lenox, Iowa
Lenox sits in Taylor County in southwest Iowa, within an hour's drive of a cluster of state park lakes that anchor the region's RV camping. The closest options run from the equestrian-friendly Lake Of Three Fires State Park north of Bedford to the larger destination campgrounds at Green Valley, Viking Lake, and Lake Anita.
Most campgrounds within reach of Lenox are operated by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Lake Of Three Fires State Park in southwest Iowa provides diverse outdoor recreation opportunities and is a hotspot for equestrian trail riding and camping. Green Valley State Park serves as a base camp for anglers trying their luck at four area lakes, Three Mile, Twelve Mile, Summit and Green Valley, all located within 10 miles of each other.
City-run options fill in the gaps. Schildberg Recreation Area Campground in Atlantic sits near a set of former quarry lakes, useful as a base for exploring Cass County or for travelers coming off Interstate 80. Viking Lake State Park is a 1,000-acre park in Montgomery County located near Stanton, centered on Viking Lake which covers 136 acres, with electric and non-electric campsites, six jetties for fishing, and a swimming beach.
Things to do near Lenox
Fishing and paddling drive most trips. Green Valley Lake holds largemouth bass, crappies, bluegill, walleyes and channel catfish, all restocked after a 2008 fishery renovation. Viking Lake offers four boat ramps and any size boat motor may be operated at no-wake speeds, with bluegill, largemouth bass, channel catfish, crappie and walleye in the water.
Trails suit families and casual riders. A 6.5 mile paved multi-use trail runs along the east and south sides of Green Valley Lake, beginning in the campground and crossing DNR-managed Mitchell Marsh, which is worth a stop for waterfowl during spring and fall migrations. More than 10 miles of multi-use trails at Lake Of Three Fires wind around the lake, through wetlands and prairie, and are open to hikers, horseback riders, and snowmobiles in season.
Swimming beaches operate at Lake Of Three Fires, Green Valley, Viking Lake, and Lake Anita during the warm months.
