Campgrounds and RV parks near Leon, IA

Nine Eagles State Park is the main outdoor draw. The 64-acre lake supports fishing for bass, channel catfish, and bluegill from a boat ramp, jetty, and five smaller docks. A sandy swim beach opens in warmer months, and nine miles of hiking trails plus six miles of bridle trails wind through wooded hills that include trees more than 300 years old. Stephens State Forest adds roughly 20 miles of multi-use trails through the Whitebreast Unit for hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and equestrian riding. Ponds in the Lucas and Whitebreast Units are stocked with bluegill, largemouth bass, and catfish. Closer to Osceola, the Lakeside Casino property provides indoor entertainment and dining for a break from the campground.

Iowa DNR campgrounds around Leon follow a clear seasonal window. Nine Eagles Campground is closed each year from November 1 through March 31, and the campground is 100 percent reservable and accepts reservations April 1 through October 31 until 10:00 pm CST the day of arrival. The park is open year-round for day use, with peak camping season running May through September. Park staff generally try to have water and shower buildings open by May 1 and begin closing them down around mid-October depending on weather. Stephens State Forest operates differently. The Lucas and Whitebreast Units allow year-round camping in non-modern campgrounds with pit toilets and no electricity, and several sites are set up for equestrian use. Campgrounds there are 100 percent reservable through the Iowa DNR online system, with a share of sites also available for first-come, first-served self-registration. Spring brings the wettest stretch and the highest chance of trail closures for horse camps. Summers are warm and humid with afternoon thunderstorms, fall delivers the most stable weather, and winter camping is limited to primitive forest sites.

Nine Eagles has modern facilities for an Iowa state park. The three campgrounds offer 68 sites, 28 with electric hookups, plus modern showers, restrooms, and a trailer dump station. Parking pads are gravel, so leveling may be required on arrival, and both back-in and pull-through sites are available for RVs and trailers. Stephens Forest is more rustic. There are no showers or modern restrooms at the state forest campgrounds, only pit toilets, and frost-free hydrants may be available in the off-season but campers should call the forest to confirm water availability. Lakeside Casino Resort RV Park sits at the opposite end of the spectrum with 47 sites, full water, sewer, and 30/50-amp electric plus Wi-Fi, and 65-foot pull-through sites on concrete pads. Expect a paved, tightly laid-out park close to I-35 traffic and the casino, with main water shut off starting December 1 and a fill hydrant kept available.
