Camping near Marengo, Iowa
Marengo sits in Iowa County in east-central Iowa, roughly midway between Cedar Rapids and Iowa City along the Iowa River. The town is best known as a base for visiting the nearby Amana Colonies, a cluster of seven historic villages designated a National Historic Landmark. RV travelers use Marengo as a quiet overnight or as a longer stay for exploring eastern Iowa's lakes, state parks, and small-town attractions.
Campground options within a short drive range from full-service private RV parks to state-run recreation areas and family campgrounds. Amana Colonies RV Park sits on 80 acres about half a mile from the village of Amana and offers over 450 sites with full and partial hookups, laundry, showers, free Wi-Fi, a camp store, and more than 20,000 square feet of event space for rallies. Pleasant Creek State Recreational Area, BEYONDER Getaway at Sleepy Hollow, Keokuk County Izaak Walton League, and Cam lo-Dis-E-Ca round out the nearby options.
Road access is straightforward: Interstate 80 runs south of Marengo, and U.S. Highway 6 passes through town, making it easy to reach campgrounds by RV from either direction.
Things to do near Marengo
The Amana Colonies are the main draw, with German heritage sites, restaurants, wineries, breweries, woolen mills, and walking trails through the historic villages. Families use Amana Colonies RV Park as a base and reach the shops on foot or by bike.
Pleasant Creek State Recreational Area centers on Pleasant Creek Lake, one of the larger lake destinations in eastern Iowa, where any size boat motor may operate at no-wake speed. Pleasant Creek State Recreational Area's campgrounds are reservation-required through the Iowa DNR system, with the busiest window from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Summer is peak season, with warm and humid weather, active lake use, and heavier bookings around holiday weekends and the Amana Colonies' festival calendar. Winter closes most campgrounds. Ice fishing is popular on area lakes, but RV camping options are extremely limited.
How to book
Reservation systems vary by operator. Iowa state park campgrounds, including Pleasant Creek State Recreational Area, use the Iowa DNR reservation system at iowastateparks.reserveamerica.com or by phone at 1-877-427-2757. Most Iowa state park sites can be reserved up to three months in advance, and Pleasant Creek is one of the DNR campgrounds that requires a reservation rather than accepting walk-ins. For cabins, a damage deposit is required in addition to the rental fee and must be paid separately.
Private campgrounds handle their own bookings. Amana Colonies RV Park takes reservations online or by phone. BEYONDER Getaway at Sleepy Hollow books through its website. Cam lo-Dis-E-Ca's family campground takes phone reservations, with bookings accepted a few months in advance.
Book early for summer weekends, Amana festival dates, and any holiday. State park cabins in particular fill months ahead.
What to expect
Sites in this area lean toward level gravel or grass pads with a mix of full hookup, water and electric, and basic tent sites. At Amana Colonies RV Park, many sites are large enough for big rigs and include 20-, 30-, and 50-amp hookups, free Wi-Fi, laundry, propane, and a camp store. Access roads inside the park are gravel and can get soft in wet conditions.
BEYONDER Getaway at Sleepy Hollow accommodates RVs and tents across uneven sites that can require significant leveling; pull-through sites work well for larger rigs, though some spots may be too short for 30-foot units. Pleasant Creek offers electric sites, modern restrooms, and a dump station at the entrance, though individual sites do not have private water or sewer hookups.
Cell reception is generally reliable near the interstate corridor and thinner in wooded state park loops.
