Campgrounds and RV parks near Minden, IA

Water recreation is a common draw. Prairie Rose is stocked with bass, channel catfish, bluegill and crappie, with eight fishing jetties providing shoreline access, two fish cleaning docks, and an overnight fishing area available in only a few Iowa state parks. Wilson Island puts campers on the Missouri River with a boat ramp and fishing for walleye, paddlefish, and catfish. Hikers and wildlife watchers have solid options too. Prairie Rose has about seven miles of multi-purpose trails that wind through the park. The adjacent DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge, just north of Wilson Island, includes a seven-mile-long oxbow lake, the Steamboat Bertrand exhibit, and heavy migratory bird traffic in spring and fall. The Loess Hills to the west offer scenic drives along the Loess Hills National Scenic Byway and quiet trails through Preparation Canyon State Park.

Camping in this part of Iowa is heavily seasonal. Prairie Rose State Park is open for the camping season through October 31, with all sites reservable via the Iowa state parks system, and the campground closes November 1 through March 31. Wilson Island's campground is 100 percent reservable and accepts reservations April 15 through October 15 and closes for the winter. Bluffs Run RV Park at Horseshoe Casino is open late April to November 1, with the RV portion closed during the coldest months. Late spring through early fall is the busiest window. Weekends around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day fill first, especially for electric and full-hookup sites at Prairie Rose and along the Missouri River. Spring migration brings snow geese flying overhead and bald eagles perched in the tall cottonwoods, and mushroom hunters find no better place at Wilson Island in the spring. Fall brings cooler nights, thinner crowds, and strong color in the hills.

Sites vary widely. Prairie Rose's East Campground features 8 full-hookup sites with water, sewer, and 20/30/50-amp electric service plus 69 electric-only sites, modern restrooms with showers and a dump station, and sites that accommodate rigs up to 60 feet with pull-through options available. Wilson Island's campground has 44 sites total, including 31 with electric hookups, 10 non-electric sites, and 3 large youth group camping areas, all serviced by modern restrooms with showers and a dump station, and reviewers note RV sites sit closer together while tent sites are more spaced. Bluffs Run is essentially a paved lot next to the casino, with 30/50-amp electric, water, laundry, and showers but no picnic tables or fire pits at sites; expect highway and train noise. Loess Hills Hideaway offers a small number of grassy RV and tent sites with hookups, gravel pads, and picnic tables. Cell coverage is reliable near I-80 and Council Bluffs and spottier in the Loess Hills. Bring bug spray in summer and firewood purchased locally.
