Things to do around Missouri Valley
The DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge is the anchor attraction, with an auto tour loop, a seven-mile oxbow lake for fishing, and a visitor center housing artifacts recovered from the steamboat Bertrand. Fall brings large concentrations of migrating snow geese and other waterfowl, and the refuge is a popular stop for birders traveling with kids.
The Loess Hills Scenic Byway runs north from Missouri Valley through ridge-top farmland and hardwood forest. Preparation Canyon State Park sits at the north end of the Loess Hills State Forest, which covers roughly 12,000 acres and is open for hiking as well as deer and turkey hunting in season. The Watson Steam Train, housed in the Missouri Valley city park, runs weekend rides on restored 1947 and 1953 Ottaway engines.

The primary camping season in western Iowa runs from mid April through mid October, when state park campgrounds operate with full services. At Wilson Island, park staff generally turn water and shower buildings on by mid April and shut them down around mid October, with the campground closed from October 16 through April 14. Summer weekends around July 4 and Labor Day fill fastest, especially at riverfront sites near DeSoto.
Spring can bring high water on the Missouri River bottom, and floodplain campgrounds have historically closed during high-flow years. Renters should check current status with the Iowa DNR before towing in. Fall is a strong shoulder season, with cooler nights, fewer bugs, and peak waterfowl migration through the DeSoto refuge.
Winter camping is limited. Most public campgrounds shut off water lines by mid October, though Loess Hills Hideaway is open year round. Snow and ice on gravel back roads can be a factor for larger rigs from December through February.
