Campgrounds near Monroe, Iowa
Monroe sits in Jasper County in central Iowa, roughly a half hour east of Des Moines and a short drive from Lake Red Rock, the state's largest body of water. The town works well as an RV base: it's minutes from Interstate 80, close to two of Iowa's busiest state park campgrounds, and surrounded by small private parks that stay open across a longer season.
The closest public option is Elk Rock State Park on the shores of Lake Red Rock, which has separate equestrian and non-equestrian loops with electric and non-electric sites. Rock Creek State Park, near Kellogg, is another central-Iowa favorite and sits on a 602-acre lake with electric, non-electric, and waterfront sites. Both parks are managed by the Iowa DNR and are 100 percent reservable.
Private options fill in the gaps. Newton / Des Moines East KOA Journey is open year-round with full hookups and pull-through sites off I-80. Kellogg RV Park and River Oaks RV Park give travelers additional small-park alternatives close to the interstate.
Things to do around Monroe
Water recreation drives most trips here. Lake Red Rock offers boating, bank and boat fishing, and paddling, with Elk Rock State Park providing lake access and a 13-mile multi-use trail system used by hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. Rock Creek Lake is known for crappie and largemouth bass, has a swimming beach, and rents pontoons, kayaks, canoes, and fishing boats through its on-site concession from roughly mid-April through mid-October.
Off the water, Iowa Speedway in Newton hosts racing events through the warm months, and Knoxville Raceway runs sprint car racing to the south. The Dutch community of Pella, about a half hour east, holds its Tulip Festival in early May.
Families staying at Newton / Des Moines East KOA Journey are within a 30-minute drive of Des Moines attractions including Adventureland, Blank Park Zoo, and Living History Farms.

The main camping season in central Iowa runs roughly April through October. Elk Rock and Rock Creek State Parks are both closed to camping through the winter: Elk Rock is closed January 1 through March 31 and again November 1 through December 31, while Rock Creek is closed November 16 through March 31. Peak season at both parks runs May 1 through October 15, when sites fill quickly on weekends.
Shoulder months matter for RV planning. At both state parks, water and shower buildings are typically turned on by mid-April and shut down around mid-October, so campers booking in early April or late October should call the park to confirm hydrants are running. Firewood sales at Elk Rock run May 1 through September 30.
Summer brings heat, humidity, and thunderstorms; fall delivers milder days and thinner crowds. Winter travelers should plan on private parks like Newton / Des Moines East KOA Journey, which stays open year-round.

Great experience! The RV was spotless and very comfortable! Everything worked as expected and it made my weekend camping trip very relaxing to have the RV delivered, setup, and ready to enjoy when I arrived. Koby was very responsive and easy to communicate with. I will be renting from him again in the future.

Robert H. - Sep 2024
Jerry exceeded our expectations with the delivery and set up of our camper. He was there early with the ac on and cold water in the fridge! He explained how to use everything inside and out, from the stove, water supply, propane, extra supplies and even provided extra treats and a fresh flower bouquet! He was easy to communicate with, knowledgeable about the campground and even checked in later in our stay to make sure we didn’t need anything. We’ll definitely be renting again from Jerry in the near future!! Thank you again for making our long getaway weekend so enjoyable!

How to book near Monroe
Iowa state park campsites are reserved through the state's official system on the ReserveAmerica platform. Both Elk Rock State Park and Rock Creek State Park are 100 percent reservable, and reservations can generally be made up to three months in advance, with same-day bookings accepted until 10 p.m. Central time on the day of arrival.
A cancellation fee applies on the state system, with additional forfeits for cancellations close to the arrival date. Under state rules, one basic camping unit is allowed per site, though a small tent or hammock may share the site with the primary unit.
Newton / Des Moines East KOA Journey books directly through KOA, with race weekends at Iowa Speedway filling well ahead. Kellogg RV Park and River Oaks RV Park are booked directly with the parks.
What to expect at Monroe campgrounds
Sites in the area range from full-hookup private RV parks to lakeside state park loops. At Rock Creek, the layout includes both electric and non-electric sites, some right on the water's edge; sites can feel close together on busy weekends, and shade is limited on many pads. Elk Rock offers electric and non-electric sites, a modern shower building, a trailer dump station, and a self-serve firewood machine, with the non-equestrian loop accommodating longer rigs.
All of Iowa is under state and federal firewood-transport quarantines for emerald ash borer, so buy firewood locally near the park and burn it during the stay.
Pets must be leashed and cannot be left unattended, and quiet hours apply overnight. Cell coverage is generally reliable near Monroe and along I-80, but can be weaker in the wooded ravines around Lake Red Rock.
