Campgrounds and RV parks near Mount Ayr, IA

Fishing anchors most trips. Green Valley Lake holds largemouth bass, crappies, bluegill, walleye, and channel catfish following a 2008 fishery renovation. Lake Of Three Fires produces bluegill, crappie, largemouth bass, bullhead, and channel catfish, with two boat ramps providing access for small craft. Both lakes are no-wake, so kayaks and small fishing boats fit naturally. On land, Green Valley State Park has a 6.5-mile paved multi-use trail on the east and south sides of the lake, connecting the campground with Creston and Southwestern Community College. Lake Of Three Fires features more than 10 miles of multi-use trail through woodlands, wetlands, and prairie, used by hikers, equestrians, and snowmobilers. Swimming beaches, playgrounds, and picnic shelters at both state parks make day trips workable for families with young kids.

The camping season in southwest Iowa runs roughly from April through October. The Green Valley State Park campground is open April 1 through October 31 and closed November 1 through March 31. Lake Of Three Fires classifies May 1 through October 15 as peak season, with shoulder weeks in April and the second half of October, and the campground closed from November 1 through March 31. Late spring and early summer are the wettest stretches. June carries the highest average rainfall, and severe thunderstorms with hail and tornadoes are a real risk across May and June. Sites near the lakes can be muddy after storms, and gravel access roads become rough when wet. Midsummer brings hot, humid days with highs in the low 80s Fahrenheit and elevated dew points. September into early October is often the most comfortable window for RV travel, with cooler nights, drier air, and lighter crowds after Labor Day. Cabins at Lake Of Three Fires stay reservable outside a January 15 through March 31 maintenance closure.

Expect a mix of hookup levels. Green Valley State Park offers electric and full-hookup sites with modern restrooms, showers, and a dump station. Lake Of Three Fires has two modern campgrounds with nonelectric and electric sites plus restrooms, showers, and a dump station, and a separate equestrian campground with corrals, hitching posts, and holding pens. Private parks in the immediate Mount Ayr area lean toward pull-through sites with 30 and 50 amp service. Cell coverage is generally usable but can drop in wooded pockets around the lakes. Access roads to smaller county parks and state park loops are often gravel and can be dusty in dry weather or slick after rain. Pets are allowed at Iowa state park campgrounds on a leash no longer than six feet and may not be left unattended at the site.
