Camping near Neola, Iowa
Neola is a small town in Pottawattamie County in western Iowa, about a fifteen-minute drive northeast of Council Bluffs and the Missouri River. It sits at the eastern edge of the Loess Hills region, close to Interstate 80 and Interstate 29, which makes it a practical base for RV travelers moving between Des Moines, Omaha, and points north.
Campgrounds within easy reach cover the full range of options. Shelby Country Inn and RV Park and I-29 Hwy 34 Campground work well for highway-oriented overnight stops, while Wilson Island State Recreation Area covers 544 acres of cottonwood stands along the Missouri River and offers showers, flush toilets, electric campsites, and three large youth group camping areas. Bluffs Run RV Park at Horseshoe Casino sits closer to the Council Bluffs entertainment corridor.
For a longer stay with water access, Prairie Rose State Park sits on the shores of a 218-acre artificial lake in the rolling hills of western Iowa's Shelby County, roughly 45 minutes east of Neola near Harlan.
Things to do around Neola
Water recreation anchors most trips. At Prairie Rose State Park, two boat ramps provide easy access to the lake for all types of boating, and any size boat motors may be used at no-wake speeds. Anglers fish for bass, channel catfish, bluegill and crappie, eight fishing jetties provide shoreline access, and the park also provides an overnight fishing area, which is only available in a few of Iowa's state parks. Approximately 7 miles of trails weave through the park, open for hiking, biking, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.
Wilson Island puts campers next to the Missouri River and the DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge. The 8,362-acre refuge preserves former river channel land, and the former river channel became DeSoto Lake, a seven-mile long oxbow lake, providing a fishery and stopover for migratory waterfowl.
Closer to Council Bluffs, families can combine camping with casino dining, the Union Pacific Railroad Museum, and Lake Manawa State Park for swimming and paddling.

How to book a site near Neola
Iowa state park campgrounds use a single reservation system. Advance cabin and campsite reservations can be made through the online reservation system at iowastateparks.reserveamerica.com, which also handles Wilson Island State Recreation Area. Reservations can be made for today and can be made up to 3 months in advance, so summer weekends open on a rolling window rather than a fixed opening day.
Private parks book directly. Shelby Country Inn and RV Park, Bluffs Run RV Park at Horseshoe Casino, and I-29 Hwy 34 Campground take reservations by phone or through their own websites and are the more flexible option for last-minute arrivals along the interstate corridor.
What to expect on arrival
State park sites in this area are generally well kept. The grounds at Prairie Rose are consistently described as well-maintained and clean, with DNR staff noted for being attentive and helpful, and wind is a recurring topic in reviews, particularly in spring and fall, when gusts can be sustained and strong enough to rock campers. The East Campground features 8 full-hookup sites with water, sewer, and 20/30/50-amp electric service, plus 69 electric-only sites, with modern restrooms, showers, and a dump station, and sites accommodate rigs up to 60 feet with pull-through options available.
Expect open, exposed terrain in this part of the state. Pack leveling blocks and secure awnings before leaving the site. Firewood must be sourced locally, and Iowa parks post reminders about emerald ash borer, discouraging the movement of firewood between counties.
