Campgrounds near New Sharon
New Sharon sits in Mahaska County in south-central Iowa, roughly midway between Oskaloosa and Grinnell. RV travelers use it as a base for two of Iowa's most popular lakes: Rock Creek Lake to the north and Lake Red Rock to the west, Iowa's largest body of water at more than 15,000 acres.
Close-in options range from small private parks to state-park campgrounds with electric hookups, showers, and dump stations. Eddyville Inn and RV Park offers a small RV setup in nearby Eddyville, while Kellogg RV Park sits just off Interstate 80 in Kellogg. Rock Creek State Park, near Kellogg, is a lakeside Iowa DNR campground with both electric and non-electric sites.
For travelers willing to drive a bit farther, Newton / Des Moines East KOA Journey provides hookups and cabins near Iowa Speedway, and Main - Elk Rock State Park sits on Lake Red Rock with modern and equestrian loops. Together these options cover interstate stopovers, lake-focused trips, and race-weekend stays.
Things to do near New Sharon
Water recreation drives most trips. Rock Creek State Park surrounds a lake with a swim beach, boat and paddlesport rentals at the marina, artificial jetties for shore fishing, and a concession that runs roughly April 15 through October 15. Anglers target crappie, bluegill, largemouth bass, walleye, and channel catfish.
Elk Rock State Park, on Lake Red Rock, offers two boat ramps and a 13-mile multi-use trail system that radiates from the equestrian campground. Spring and fall bring white pelicans and other migratory waterfowl up the Des Moines River, and bald eagles are common through winter.
Off the water, families visit Pella for its annual Tulip Festival in early May, tour Iowa Speedway near the Newton KOA, and ride the roughly five-mile bike trail from Rock Creek State Park into Grinnell.

Iowa DNR state park camping runs primarily April through mid-November. Rock Creek State Park Campground is closed November 16 through March 31, with a peak window from May 1 through October 15 and shoulder windows on either side. Elk Rock State Park Campground closes November 1 through March 31 and follows the same peak dates. Park staff generally turn on water, showers, and dump stations by May 1 and start shutting them down around mid-October, weather dependent.
Late spring through early fall is peak season. Weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day fill fastest, especially lakeside electric sites at Rock Creek and Elk Rock. Iowa Speedway race weekends drive heavy demand at the Newton KOA, and Pella's Tulip Festival in early May tightens availability across the region.
Winter shifts activity to ice fishing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling on trails around Rock Creek Lake. Private parks such as Eddyville Inn and RV Park operate outside the state-park calendar for shoulder-season and winter stays.

Great experience! The RV was spotless and very comfortable! Everything worked as expected and it made my weekend camping trip very relaxing to have the RV delivered, setup, and ready to enjoy when I arrived. Koby was very responsive and easy to communicate with. I will be renting from him again in the future.

Robert H. - Sep 2024
Jerry exceeded our expectations with the delivery and set up of our camper. He was there early with the ac on and cold water in the fridge! He explained how to use everything inside and out, from the stove, water supply, propane, extra supplies and even provided extra treats and a fresh flower bouquet! He was easy to communicate with, knowledgeable about the campground and even checked in later in our stay to make sure we didn’t need anything. We’ll definitely be renting again from Jerry in the near future!! Thank you again for making our long getaway weekend so enjoyable!

How to book campgrounds near New Sharon
Iowa DNR state parks, including Rock Creek and Elk Rock, are 100 percent reservable through the Iowa State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Standard campsites can be booked up to three months in advance, and reservations remain open until 10:00 p.m. CST on the day of arrival. Cancellation fees apply, with larger forfeitures inside the 30-day window.
Lake Red Rock also has U.S. Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds around the reservoir, bookable through Recreation.gov alongside Elk Rock State Park.
Private parks book direct. Newton / Des Moines East KOA Journey reserves through the KOA website or by phone, and Eddyville Inn and RV Park and Kellogg RV Park take bookings directly. For race weekends, tulip-festival dates, and lakeside holiday weekends, book several weeks to months out.
What to expect at New Sharon campgrounds
Iowa state park campgrounds in this area offer a mix of electric and non-electric sites, modern shower buildings, dump stations, and self-serve firewood. Rock Creek and Elk Rock both have interior roads and gravel pads, and some Rock Creek sites sit right on the water. Elk Rock's non-equestrian loop accommodates rigs up to about 80 feet in length.
Because emerald ash borer is confirmed in counties across Iowa, campers should buy firewood locally rather than transport it in. Pets are welcome on a leash no longer than six feet and cannot be left unattended.
Expect summer humidity, active mosquito periods after rain, and occasional trail closures at Elk Rock after wet weather. Quiet hours are enforced at both state parks and the Newton KOA.
