Campgrounds and RV parks near Palo, IA

Pleasant Creek Lake is the main draw. Any size motor is allowed at no-wake speed, and four boat ramps plus a kayak launch make water access easy. Anglers target muskellunge, channel catfish, largemouth bass, and white bass, and swimming is allowed sunrise to sunset at the designated beach. The park also has 8.5 miles of trails used for hiking, mountain biking, equestrian riding, and cross-country skiing. At Palisades-Kepler State Park, nearly six miles of rugged trails cross river bluffs and hardwood forest, with wildflowers common in spring and shore fishing along the Cedar River near the old dam. Off-park, families visit the seven Amana Colonies villages for German heritage sites, bike trails, and shops, all a short drive from Palo.

The camping season in this part of Iowa is tightly tied to the state park calendar. Pleasant Creek State Recreational Area accepts reservations April through October and is closed November through March. Palisades-Kepler State Park accepts reservations April 1 through November 15, with peak reservable season from May 1 to October 15, an off-peak shoulder in April and mid-October to mid-November, and full closure from November 16 through March 31. Amana Colonies RV Park opens in April and closes in late fall, with staff answering planning calls year-round. Summer brings warm, humid days and the busiest weekends; holiday weekends at Pleasant Creek and Palisades-Kepler fill early. Late spring produces the heaviest rain of the season, so low-lying river sites can flood. Fall is quieter, with cool nights, hardwood color along the Cedar River, and easier same-week bookings. Winter closes almost every developed campground in the area. Ice fishing continues on Pleasant Creek Lake, but overnight camping is not available at the state parks.

State park campgrounds in this area are basic but well maintained. Pleasant Creek offers electric and non-electric sites with modern showers and a sanitary station at the entrance; individual sites do not have private water or sewer hookups. Palisades-Kepler has both electric and non-electric sites, modern restrooms, and a trailer dump station, with sites shaded by mature hardwoods along the Cedar River bluffs. Amana Colonies RV Park is the most RV-friendly stop, with 50-amp service, level gravel pads, laundry, a camp store, free Wi-Fi, and a four-vehicle sanitary station on 80 acres. Trees are scattered rather than continuous, so tall rigs and Starlink users have clear sky. Iowa is a confirmed emerald ash borer zone in all 99 counties, so buy firewood locally rather than hauling it in. Expect mosquitoes near the river after rain, and pack for humidity in summer.
