Campgrounds and RV parks near Perry, IA

The Raccoon River Valley Trail is the headline activity in the immediate area. The paved loop runs through more than a dozen communities and passes close to Perry and Adel, making it easy to roll bikes off an RV and onto the trail. Ledges State Park draws hikers and families for its sandstone bluffs, creek crossings along Pea's Creek, and the one-way canyon drive overlooking the Des Moines River Valley. The High Trestle Trail bridge near Madrid is another popular ride. Des Moines, roughly a half-hour southeast, adds the Science Center of Iowa, Blank Park Zoo, Adventureland, and the downtown farmers' market. Closer to home, Perry's Hotel Pattee, downtown murals, and small-town diners give kids and adults a low-key afternoon break.

Central Iowa has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons, so timing matters for an RV trip. The main camping window runs from late spring through mid-fall. Ledges State Park's campground accepts reservations March through November and is closed December through February. Peak season at Ledges runs from May 1 through October 15, and a reservation is required for all sites during the open season. Late May through early September brings warm days, frequent thunderstorms, and the busiest weekends. Severe weather, including tornadoes and hail, is most likely from May into July, so checking forecasts before travel days is important. September and early October are often the most comfortable stretch, with cooler nights, lower humidity, and strong fall color along the river valleys. Winter camping options are limited. Some private parks may stay open year-round with reduced services, but most Iowa state and county sites close water, showers, and dump stations from mid-October until around May 1.

Most RV campgrounds near Perry sit on flat to gently rolling ground, which makes leveling straightforward for trailers and motorhomes. Hookup availability varies: private parks such as Des Moines West KOA Holiday and Timberline RV Campground typically offer full hookups and 30/50-amp service, while Ledges State Park has a mix of electric and non-electric sites along with modern restrooms, showers, and a dump station. Cell service is reliable near Adel, Perry, and the Des Moines metro, but can be spotty inside Ledges State Park's wooded canyon. Buy firewood locally near the park and burn it on site; moving firewood across state lines can spread emerald ash borer and other forest pests. Mosquitoes peak in midsummer near rivers and creeks. Quiet hours, leashed pets, and generator-use windows (typically 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Ledges) are standard at state and private parks alike.
