Campgrounds and RV parks near Postville, IA

Postville sits in northeast Iowa's Driftless Area, a region of limestone bluffs, spring-fed streams, and hardwood valleys that escaped the flattening of the last glaciation. The town is a practical base for RV travelers exploring Allamakee, Clayton, and Fayette counties, with campgrounds ranging from private resorts to a large state recreation area within roughly a 30-minute drive. Private options nearby include Skip-A-Way Resort, Sampson Springs Campground, Spook Cave & Campground, and Deer Run Resort, most offering full-hookup RV sites, cabins, and family amenities. For public land camping, Volga River State Recreation Area, often called Little Switzerland for its rugged topography, covers about 5,700 acres of prairie, rock formations, and woodland, with old steel bridges crossing the Volga River. The area suits families and slower-paced trips: short driving distances between attractions, dark rural skies, and access to the Upper Iowa and Mississippi river corridors within an hour.

Volga River State Recreation Area is reserved through the Iowa State Parks system on ReserveAmerica. Two campgrounds are available: Albany, with equestrian and non-equestrian sites (electric hookups at the equestrian loop, non-electric sites elsewhere, a water hydrant, vault toilets, and no showers), and Lakeview, which has modern showers, restrooms, a sanitary dump station, and a mix of electric-and-water and full-hookup sites. Reservations can be changed up to four days before arrival when paying by card. Private campgrounds such as Skip-A-Way Resort, Sampson Springs Campground, Spook Cave & Campground, and Deer Run Resort take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Book summer weekends and any holiday week well in advance; midweek and shoulder-season openings are usually easier.
