Campgrounds and RV parks near Scranton, IA

Whiterock Conservancy is the main outdoor draw close to Scranton. Its Oak Ridge campground provides immediate access to 40 miles of trails, including 20 miles designated for equestrian use, along with mountain biking singletrack and paddling on the Middle Raccoon River. Springbrook State Park adds a small lake and wooded hikes: the park contains a 17-acre spring-fed lake and over 12 miles of hiking trails that lead through timber and prairie areas, with swimming, kayaking, and fishing for bass and bluegill. Black Hawk State Park centers on a large natural lake with boat ramps, fishing, and swim beaches. Dolliver Memorial State Park is worth the drive for the Copperas Beds sandstone bluffs, Boneyard Hollow canyon, and river paddling on the Des Moines.

Camping season in this part of Iowa runs primarily from spring through fall. Springbrook Campground is closed January 1 through March 31, off-peak from April 1 through April 30, peak from May 1 through October 15, off-peak from October 16 through October 31, and closed November 1 through December 31, and other central Iowa DNR parks such as Black Hawk and Dolliver Memorial follow a similar pattern. Park staff generally try to have the water on and shower buildings and dump stations open by May 1, and start closing them down around mid-October depending on the weather. Summer weekends, especially around the Fourth of July and the Lake View Water Carnival in July at Black Hawk, book out well in advance. Spring and early fall bring cooler nights, fewer bugs, and easier site selection, with fall color usually best in October along the river valleys. Whiterock Conservancy remains open year-round for camping, but winter services are limited. At Springbrook, snowmobiling is allowed on four miles of designated trails in winter, and Dolliver's trails see light use for hiking on mild days.

Expect rural, low-traffic driving on state highways and county roads. Sites at Iowa DNR parks are a mix of electric and non-electric, with modern restrooms, hot showers, and a dump station on-site. RV length limits vary by loop, so check site details before booking a larger rig. Cell service is inconsistent in the river valleys. At Springbrook, cell service is nonexistent for most carriers, so plan accordingly, and coverage at Dolliver is similarly poor. At Whiterock, cell coverage is spotty in the lower sections of the valley along the river. Download maps and reservations before arriving. Mosquitoes and ticks are active from late spring through early fall, especially near river bottoms and wooded trails. Firewood should be purchased locally: no out-of-state firewood is allowed, to reduce the risk of introducing emerald ash borer and other forest pests. Bring water, since some hydrants are shut off in shoulder seasons.
