Campgrounds near Shelby, Iowa
Shelby sits at Exit 34 on Interstate 80 in western Iowa's Shelby County, about 40 miles east of Council Bluffs and Omaha. The town serves as a practical staging point for RV travelers crossing Iowa or heading into the Loess Hills, and it puts several very different camping options within a short drive.
Right in town, Shelby Country Inn and RV Park offers full-hookup pull-through sites just off the interstate. A short drive north, East - Prairie Rose State Park is a 422-acre park in southwest Iowa built around a 218-acre lake, with a swim beach and two boat ramps, plus electric and full-hookup sites and modern showers in the East Campground. Schildberg Recreation Area Campground, run by the City of Atlantic about 25 miles east, offers full hookups around a set of former quarry lakes.
Heading west toward the Missouri River, Bluffs Run RV Park at Horseshoe Casino gives RVers a paved, hookup-equipped lot next to the casino in Council Bluffs. Farther north, Loess Hills Hideaway Cabins and Campground sits on 32 acres of hilly woodland and prairie in the Loess Hills, about an hour north of Omaha.
Things to do near Shelby
Prairie Rose State Park is the main outdoor draw. The lake supports bass, channel catfish, bluegill and crappie fishing, and eight fishing jetties provide shoreline access. The 218-acre lake is popular for canoeing and kayaking, with two modern boat ramps and no-wake speeds for motors. Seven miles of multi-purpose trails wind through the park and are open for hiking, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing in winter.
Schildberg Recreation Area adds former quarry lakes, paved trails, playgrounds and an off-leash dog park on the edge of Atlantic. Loess Hills Hideaway is minutes from Preparation Canyon State Park and the Loess Hills State Forest, which offers over 12,000 acres for hiking and hunting.
West of Shelby, Council Bluffs and Omaha add urban options: casinos, riverfront trails, museums and dining, all within an hour of most campgrounds on this list.

The prime RV season in this part of Iowa runs from May through mid-October. Prairie Rose is open for the camping season through October 31 and the campground closes November 1 through March 31. Park staff generally try to have water on and shower buildings and dump stations open by May 1 and start closing them around mid-October, so April and late-October trips may find modern facilities unavailable.
Summer weekends and holidays fill fastest at state park sites, especially electric and full-hookup loops at Prairie Rose. Bluffs Run RV Park at Horseshoe Casino is open late April to November 1 and closes during winter, though overnight parking in casino lots may still be permitted.
Shelby Country Inn and RV Park and Loess Hills Hideaway stay open year-round, which makes them the practical choices for late-fall hunting trips or winter travel across I-80. Snow, ice and wind chill are all realistic factors from December through February.

How to book near Shelby
Iowa state park campgrounds, including East - Prairie Rose State Park, are 100 percent reservable and a reservation is required. Bookings go through the Iowa DNR system at iowastateparks.reserveamerica.com. Most Iowa campsites can be reserved up to 3 months in advance, with limited walk-in availability on a first-come basis. The last day to make a camping reservation, paying by credit or debit card, is 2 days before arrival. A nonrefundable cancellation fee applies to each cancellation, and cancellations one day prior to arrival forfeit one night's camping fee.
Schildberg Recreation Area Campground and Loess Hills Hideaway Cabins and Campground take reservations directly through their operator websites. Shelby Country Inn and RV Park and Bluffs Run RV Park at Horseshoe Casino are best booked by phone, especially for large rigs or shoulder-season stays.
What to expect near Shelby
Expect a mix of interstate-adjacent RV parks and quieter public campgrounds. Shelby Country Inn and RV Park is a flat, full-hookup lot right off I-80 with pull-through sites; convenient, but road noise is a known trade-off. Bluffs Run is essentially a paved lot next to the casino with 30- and 50-amp electric, water, paved sites, restrooms, showers and laundry, but limited shade.
Prairie Rose feels more like a traditional campground: the East Campground has 8 full-hookup sites and 69 electric-only sites, with modern restrooms, showers and a dump station. Schildberg adds lake access and paved trails. Loess Hills Hideaway is the most rustic option, with six grassy RV and tent sites on gravel pads, 35-amp hookups, and picnic tables and fire pits at each site, accommodating rigs up to 32 feet.
Cell service is generally good along the I-80 corridor and weaker in the Loess Hills. Emerald ash borer has been confirmed in all 99 Iowa counties and quarantines have been removed, but buying firewood locally is still encouraged.
