Campgrounds and RV parks near Shellsburg, IA

The lake at Pleasant Creek is the region's main draw. Any size boat motor may be operated at no-wake speed, four boat ramps and a kayak launching area provide easy access to the water, and kayaking, canoeing, scuba diving and windsurfing are popular. Swimming is allowed from sunrise to sunset at the designated beach area only. Anglers can fish for muskellunge, channel catfish, largemouth bass, white bass and other species. On land, the recreation area offers multi-use trails for hiking, running, mountain and fat tire biking, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and equestrian riding, with connecting access to scenic overlooks. Wickiup Hill Outdoor Learning Center, a Linn County nature facility, sits a short drive away and interprets local natural history. Families staying at Amana Colonies RV Park can walk or bike into the historic villages for shops, restaurants, and seasonal festivals.

The camping window in this part of Iowa is narrow and predictable. Pleasant Creek State Recreational Area's campground is closed January through March, opens in April at off-peak status, runs peak from May through mid-October, and accepts reservations through November 15. Private parks track a similar calendar: Amana Colonies RV Park is open seasonally from April through October, with staff on duty year-round to help travelers plan future stays. Late spring and early summer bring the greenest conditions and the best paddling on Pleasant Creek Lake, but they also bring the most rain and the highest thunderstorm risk. Peak family demand runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when weekend sites at the state recreation area routinely fill and holiday weekends book out well in advance. September and early October are often the best value for RV travelers: temperatures drop into a comfortable range, biting insects taper off, and the Amana Colonies host Oktoberfest and other harvest events. Winter travel is limited, since the state park campground closes and private parks wind down in late fall.

Expect a mix of paved and gravel interior roads, level pads, and modest tree cover. At Pleasant Creek, camping is spread across three non-equestrian campgrounds with electric and non-electric sites and two modern shower and restroom buildings. There is no water or sewer at individual sites, but a dump station and fresh-water fill are available in the park. Private parks in the region lean toward full-hookup RV sites. Amana Colonies RV Park is an 80-acre full-service campground half a mile from the village of Amana, with level campsites, full and partial hookups, showers, laundry, free Wi-Fi, a camp store, a sanitary station, over 450 RV sites and tent camping. Cell service is generally reliable across the corridor. Bring bug spray for summer, and expect soft ground on gravel loops after heavy rain.
