Campgrounds and RV parks near Shenandoah, IA

Waubonsie State Park is known for exceptional vistas of Iowa's Loess Hills and the Nebraska plains, with a trail system that serves mountain bikers, equestrians, and hikers through ridgetop prairies and shaded woodland valleys. The Sunset Ridge Nature Trail traverses the heart of the park and offers sweeping views of the Missouri River Valley. Viking Lake State Park adds flat-water recreation: fishing, kayaking, and swimming on the lake, plus shoreline trails. Lewis and Clark/Brownville State Recreation Area gives access to the Missouri River for boating and bank fishing. In town, Shenandoah has grocery stores, hardware, and fuel for restocking mid-trip. Families often pair a day at Viking Lake with a drive through the Loess Hills country south of the park.

Peak camping season in southwest Iowa runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, when both Waubonsie State Park and Viking Lake State Park see the heaviest demand. Summer weekends fill first, and holiday weekends can be reserved out weeks in advance. Weekday nights are usually easier to secure. Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV travel here. Days are mild, humidity drops, and fall color moves through the Loess Hills timber in October. Bugs are lighter than in midsummer, and the state park trails are less crowded. Winter camping in the state parks is not an option at Waubonsie: the Waubonsie and equestrian campgrounds are closed from November 1 through March 31, with peak season running May 1 through October 15. Modern restroom and shower facilities are seasonal and usually closed from mid-October through mid-April. Private parks like All American Campground and RV Park and Victorian Acres RV Park and Campgrounds are the better bet for cold-weather stays with hookups.

Waubonsie has a modern campground with non-electric and electric campsites, modern showers, restrooms, and a sanitary dump station. The more primitive equestrian campground contains non-electric sites with hitching rails, pens, and pit vault toilets. Sites can feel close together on busy weekends, so check the site map when booking. Viking Lake State Park has electric sites, modern facilities, and lake access. Cell coverage is generally usable in and around Shenandoah but can drop in wooded valleys inside the state parks. Roads into the state parks are paved, but interior campground loops can be narrow and hilly. Larger fifth wheels and Class A rigs should confirm site length limits before arrival. Emerald ash borer has been confirmed in all 99 counties in Iowa, so buy firewood locally and burn it all during the stay.
