Campgrounds and RV parks near Shueyville, IA

Water recreation is the main draw. Lake Macbride State Park offers a swimming beach, seven boat ramps, dock slips, ADA-accessible fishing piers, a fish cleaning station, and over seven miles of hiking trails, with boat rentals operating Memorial Day through Labor Day for pontoons, kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards. Motorboats are limited to 5 mph on Lake Macbride, with a 10 horsepower cap in effect from the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day. At Palisades-Kepler State Park, visitors hike nearly six miles of rugged trails through diverse wildlife and forest habitats, spot spring wildflowers, and fish the Cedar River for channel catfish, bass, and walleye. Coralville Lake, adjacent to Scales Pointe Camping and Boating, adds paddling, larger-boat access, and beach days. Iowa City, the University of Iowa campus, and the Amana Colonies are all easy day trips from a Shueyville-area base.

The camping season in this part of Iowa is tightly tied to the state park calendar. The Lake Macbride campground accepts reservations from April 1 through November 15 and is closed November 16 through March 31. Palisades-Kepler follows the same window, accepting reservations April 1 through November 15 and closing November 16 through March 31. Cam lo-Dis-E-Ca and Scales Pointe generally operate through the warm-weather months, with private-park hours confirmed directly with the operator. Spring brings wildflowers along the Cedar River bluffs and active birding around Lake Macbride, but river levels can run high after rain. Summer is peak season: warm, humid, and busy on weekends, with boat rentals and the beach concession in full swing at Lake Macbride from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Fall delivers cooler nights, hardwood color along the Palisades ravines when black maple trees turn golden in mid to late October, and lighter weekday bookings. Winter shuts state park sites down entirely; overnight camping in the state parks is not available from mid-November through March.
