Sidney camping overview
Sidney sits in Fremont County in the southwest corner of Iowa, close to the Missouri River and the Loess Hills. It works well as a base for RV travelers exploring the Iowa, Nebraska, and Missouri tri-state area, with campgrounds ranging from a large state park to small commercial RV parks and a riverside recreation area just across the state line.
The closest public option is Main - Waubonsie State Park, which sits on nearly 2,000 acres in southwest Iowa's Loess Hills, offering vistas of the Missouri River Valley and the Nebraska plains. The modern campground has non-electric and electric campsites with modern showers, restrooms, and a sanitary dump station, plus a separate primitive equestrian campground with hitching rails, pens, and pit vault toilets.
West of Sidney, across the river in Nebraska City, Riverview Marina State Recreation Area is a 47-acre site adjacent to the Missouri River that offers electrical and primitive campsites with a shower house. Nearby private options include Victorian Acres RV Park and Campgrounds, Hidden Falls Cabins and RV Park, and the highway-adjacent I-29 Hwy 34 Campground, useful for shorter stays or interstate travel.
Things to do near Sidney
Main - Waubonsie State Park is the main outdoor draw. Its extensive trail system serves mountain bikers, equestrians, and hikers exploring ridgetop prairies and shaded woodland valleys, and the park is a site on the Lewis and Clark Historic Trail. The Sunset Ridge Nature Trail traverses the heart of the park with sweeping views of the Missouri River Valley.
River-based recreation centers on the Missouri. Anglers target blue catfish, buffalo, common carp, channel catfish, flathead catfish, freshwater drum, goldeye, and shovelnose sturgeon, and Riverview Marina State Recreation Area offers boaters access to the river via two ramps and one dock, welcoming all types of boats.
Sidney itself is a small county seat, and Nebraska City across the river adds Lewis and Clark museums, orchards, and historic sites within a short drive of the listed campgrounds.

The core camping season runs from spring through mid-fall. Main - Waubonsie State Park is open year-round for camping, but modern restroom and shower facilities at the non-equestrian campground are seasonal and usually closed from mid-October through mid-April. Park staff generally try to have the water on and shower buildings and dump stations open by May 1, and start closing them down around mid-October depending on the weather. Frost-free hydrants may be available for off-season camping, but campers should call the park to confirm.
Across the river, Riverview Marina State Recreation Area typically operates from April through October, with pad sites offering 20- and 30-amp electrical hookups and primitive non-pad sites. Private parks such as Victorian Acres, Hidden Falls, and I-29 Hwy 34 Campground generally keep longer seasons and may accept winter stays, though hookups can be limited when temperatures drop.
Summer weekends fill first, particularly around holidays and when Waubonsie's cabins are booked. Late spring and early fall bring milder weather, lighter crowds, and better trail conditions in the Loess Hills.
How to book near Sidney
Main - Waubonsie State Park is fully reservable. Cabin and campsite reservations can be made through the Iowa State Parks online reservation system, and the campgrounds are 100 percent reservable with a reservation required. The Iowa State Parks system uses ReserveAmerica, and campsite reservations can be made for today and up to three months in advance. Cabins can be reserved up to 12 months in advance.
Riverview Marina State Recreation Area is managed by Nebraska Game and Parks, and all camping at the park is first-come, first-served, with nightly fees paid at a self-service Iron Ranger station. A Nebraska park entry permit is required. Victorian Acres RV Park and Campgrounds, Hidden Falls Cabins and RV Park, and I-29 Hwy 34 Campground are private operators and book directly by phone or through their websites; call ahead for larger rigs to confirm site length and turning access.
What to expect on-site
Facilities vary widely across the area. The modern loop at Main - Waubonsie State Park has electric and non-electric sites with modern showers, restrooms, and a dump station, while the equestrian campground is more primitive with non-electric sites, hitching rails, pens, and pit vault toilets. Waubonsie's cabins are simple; some are not equipped with running water, modern restrooms, or showers inside, with a water hydrant outside and a pit latrine behind the cabin.
At Riverview Marina, expect a compact, low-key riverside layout with 24 electrical pad sites at 20 and 30 amp, 50 non-electric sites, and a modern shower house. Sites are mostly open with limited shade, and immediate access to the Missouri River makes it boater-friendly. Cell service is generally usable in and around Sidney and Nebraska City but can be spotty inside Waubonsie's wooded ravines.
