Campgrounds and RV parks near Solon, IA

Water dominates the itinerary. Boating on Lake Macbride, relaxing on the beach with refreshments from the concession stand, and renting pontoons, motorboats, canoes, kayaks and paddle boards are the core summer activities. A 10 horsepower motor limit is in effect from the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day, and motorboats must not exceed 5 mph on Lake Macbride at any time, which keeps the water calm for paddlers and families. Hiking is strong throughout the area. More than seven miles of multi-use trails wind around Lake Macbride through oak and hickory forest and restored Iowa prairie. At Palisades-Kepler, roughly six miles of trails climb above the Cedar River past dramatic bluffs. Anglers target channel catfish, bass and bluegills in the Cedar River, fishing by boat or along the shore. Day trips include the Amana Colonies, the Herbert Hoover Presidential Museum in West Branch, and downtown Iowa City.

Iowa state parks around Solon run a defined camping season. The Lake Macbride campground accepts reservations from April 1 through November 15 and is closed November 16 through March 31. Palisades-Kepler follows the same window, with peak-season rates from May 1 through October 15 and off-peak shoulders on either side. Spring brings wildflowers, migratory birds, and cool nights. Park staff generally try to have water on and shower buildings and dump stations open by May 1, and typically start closing shower buildings and turning off water and dump stations around mid-October depending on the weather. RV travelers camping in April or later in October should confirm hookup availability directly with the park. Summer is the busiest stretch. Weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day book out well in advance, with holiday weekends filling fastest. A 10 horsepower motor limit is in effect on Lake Macbride from the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day, tightening what larger boats can do on the lake during peak season. Fall delivers cooler temperatures, quieter loops, and strong color through the hardwoods along the Cedar River.

At Lake Macbride, the northern modern campground has 32 standard electric sites (20/30/50 amp) and 11 full-hookup sites with water and sewer, accommodating RVs up to 60 feet in length. The southern unit features 52 primitive tent-only sites in a heavily wooded, shaded setting near the water, and both campgrounds offer modern restrooms with flush toilets and shower facilities. Palisades-Kepler has 44 campsites, 26 with electric hookups, along with modern shower and restroom facilities and a trailer dump station, plus four family cabins. Expect tight spacing on busy weekends; sites cluster close together with limited privacy at peak times. Bring cash for firewood and follow Iowa's firewood guidance. Buy firewood locally near the park and burn it all during your stay to help slow the spread of forest pests. Pets are welcome on leash in most loops, but the cabins at Palisades-Kepler are pet-free.
