Camping near Stanton, Iowa
Stanton sits in Montgomery County in southwest Iowa, a rural area of rolling farmland, small lakes, and state parks within easy RV driving distance. The closest full-service camping is at Viking Lake State Park, a short drive southeast of town. Additional state park campgrounds lie within about an hour, giving travelers several options for a single trip or a multi-stop loop.
The Iowa DNR manages the region's largest and most popular campgrounds, including Viking Lake State Park, Lake Of Three Fires State Park, and Lake Anita State Park. Each is built around a small no-wake lake with a swimming beach, boat ramps, and hiking trails. City and county parks fill in the gaps, with Schildberg Recreation Area Campground in nearby Atlantic and Shelby Country Inn and RV Park offering additional hookup sites.
Most sites in the area accommodate travel trailers and mid-size motorhomes. Electric and full-hookup sites exist at the state parks, and dump stations are standard. Rigs longer than about 35 feet should check site dimensions before booking.
Things to do around Stanton
Lake recreation drives most trips. Viking Lake State Park has four boat ramps and shoreline fishing access, with bluegill, largemouth bass, channel catfish, crappie, and walleye in the water. A sandy swimming beach sits on the western shore, and any size boat motor may be operated at no-wake speeds.
Trail users have solid options. The park's 5.5 mile multi-use trail circles Viking Lake and is well marked and maintained. Lake Of Three Fires State Park has more than 10 miles of multi-use trails winding around the lake, through wetlands and prairie, with grass, rock, and dirt surfaces used for hiking, horseback riding, and snowmobiling.
For a paved family ride, the Grass Roots Trail at Lake Anita State Park connects the park to downtown Anita. Schildberg Recreation Area Campground centers on scenic ponds with walking paths and a dog park in Atlantic.
