Campgrounds and RV parks near Stratford, IA

Water and trails dominate the local recreation menu. Brushy Creek Lake supports swimming, boating, and fishing for bluegill, crappie, largemouth bass, channel catfish, walleye, and muskellunge, with four boat ramps, eight fishing jetties, and an accessible fishing pier on the west side of the lake. The park's trail network is open to hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, with snowmobiling and cross-country skiing in winter. At Ledges State Park, the canyon drive along Peas Creek passes sandstone ledges that rise nearly 100 feet above the streambed, and a four-mile trail system connects overlooks, CCC-era stone structures, and an accessible interpretive trail to Lost Lake. Dolliver Memorial State Park adds roughly six miles of rugged trails through the Copperas Beds and Boneyard Hollow, along with a boat ramp on the Des Moines River.

Iowa state park campgrounds run on a clear seasonal calendar. At Ledges State Park, the campground accepts reservations March through November and is closed December through February, with the peak season running May 1 through October 15. Dolliver Memorial State Park is 100 percent reservable from April 1 through October 31 and closed November 1 through March 31. Brushy Creek State Recreation Area stays open through winter for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing, but modern facilities follow the same shoulder-season pattern. Across Iowa DNR parks, staff generally turn water on and open shower buildings and dump stations by May 1, then begin shutting them down around mid-October depending on weather. Off-season campers should call the park to confirm whether frost-free hydrants are available, since modern facilities are not guaranteed in April or after mid-October. Summer weekends and holiday periods fill fastest, especially at the Brushy Creek State Recreation Area - Beach loop and at Ledges. Spring and fall bring cooler temperatures, fewer bugs, and easier same-week booking. Check current alerts before booking, since road preservation work and temporary closures can affect specific loops at Ledges.

Sites in this area lean toward modern but not full-service. Ledges State Park offers 16 full-hookup sites and 53 electric-only sites in the main campground, plus hike-in tent sites, with modern restrooms, showers, a dump station, and a playground under a canopy of trees. Most sites are back-in on gravel pads. Dolliver Memorial State Park has a smaller campground overlooking the Des Moines River with 18 electric sites, one full-hookup pull-through, three tent-only sites, and two basic family cabins. Modern restrooms, showers, and a dump station are on site, but there is no camp store and cell service is very limited in the river valley. The non-equestrian loop at Brushy Creek State Recreation Area includes electric and full-hookup sites with water and sewer, while the equestrian loops use hitch rails, with portable pens and electric fences not permitted.
