Campgrounds near Sumner, Iowa
Sumner sits in Bremer County in northeast Iowa, within short driving range of both private RV resorts and Iowa DNR state park campgrounds. The area falls inside the region often called "Little Switzerland" because of its rugged topography, with steel bridges crossing the Volga River and rock formations, prairie and woodland that contrast with the flatter farm country farther south and west.
Closest to town, Lakeshore RV Resort and Campground and Morwood Campground and Resort offer full-hookup private sites geared toward RV travelers. Lakeshore RV Resort and Campground sits on Lake Oelwein and offers 30 and 50 amp full hook-up sites, restrooms and showers, laundry, Wi-Fi, a beach swim area, fishing, mini golf, pickleball, volleyball, shuffleboard, and a playground. Morwood Campground and Resort operates as a full-hookup facility in Hazleton with electric, water and sewer at each site and runs seasonally from mid-April through mid-October.
For a state park setting, Volga River State Recreation Area - Lakeview and George Wyth State Park bracket the region to the east and south. River Ranch Camping rounds out the private options for a smaller, river-adjacent stay.
Things to do near Sumner
Water and trails drive most trips. At Volga River State Recreation Area, campers can hike or bike more than 20 miles of multi-use trails used by equestrian riders, mountain bikers, snowmobilers and cross-country skiers across the seasons, and fish for bluegill, crappie, largemouth bass and more at Frog Hollow Lake.
George Wyth State Park, between Waterloo and Cedar Falls, is built around four lakes. The park centers around Brinker Lake, George Wyth Lake, Fisher Lake and Alice Wyth Lake, with fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding and canoeing popular. The Cedar Valley Trail, a paved regional trail system, runs directly through the park and links campers to more than 100 miles of connected trails in the Waterloo and Cedar Falls metro.
Lakeshore RV Resort and Campground layers in resort-style amenities on Lake Oelwein, and Morwood Campground and Resort hosts weekend themes and kids' activities during the warm season.

The camping calendar in this part of Iowa is short and clearly defined. State park campgrounds run a peak and off-peak schedule and close in winter. At Volga River State Recreation Area, Lakeview Campground is closed November 16 through March 31, off peak April 1 to April 30, peak May 1 to October 15, and off peak again October 16 to November 15. George Wyth's campground follows a similar rhythm: closed January 1 through March 31, off peak in April, peak May 1 to October 15, off peak October 16 to 31, and closed again November 1 through December 31.
Water and facilities are seasonal too. Park staff generally try to have water hydrants, showers and dump stations open by May 1, and start shutting them down around mid-October depending on the weather, so early-April and late-October trips may find modern facilities off.
Private parks generally mirror the state schedule. Morwood Campground and Resort operates mid-April through mid-October, and campers should confirm shoulder-season hookups directly with each park.
How to book campsites near Sumner
Iowa DNR state parks use a single central reservation system. Advance campsite reservations at George Wyth State Park and at Volga River State Recreation Area - Lakeview are made online through the Iowa state parks reservation system, and both campgrounds are 100% reservable with a reservation required. Reservations can be made for today and up to three months in advance, and same-day bookings are accepted until 10 p.m. Central time.
A cancellation fee applies for all cancellations. Cancellations the day before arrival forfeit one night's camping fee plus the cancellation fee, and cancellations on the arrival date forfeit two nights plus the cancellation fee. Private parks like Lakeshore RV Resort and Campground, Morwood Campground and Resort, and River Ranch Camping book directly through each park's office or website.
What to expect on the ground
Sites near Sumner range from resort-style RV pads to wooded state park loops. Lakeview Campground at Volga River has modern showers and restrooms and a dump station at the entrance, with most sites offering electric plus water or full hook-up including sewer. George Wyth's campground has both electric and non-electric sites, modern showers, restrooms and a dump station, with the Cedar Valley Trail accessible directly from the campground.
Expect firewood restrictions. Emerald ash borer has been confirmed across Iowa, so the entire state is under state and federal firewood transport quarantines, and it is a direct violation of the federal quarantine to transport firewood from a quarantined area into a non-quarantined area. Buy firewood on site or from a local vendor.
Bug pressure can be heavy near standing water in mid-summer, and pets must stay leashed under state park rules.
