Campgrounds and RV parks near Treynor, IA

Wilson Island puts campers next to the Missouri River and adjacent to the DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge covers roughly 7,800 acres and includes a seven-mile oxbow lake that draws migratory waterfowl and supports a strong local fishery. The DeSoto Visitor Center houses artifacts recovered from the steamboat Bertrand, which sank in the Missouri in 1865. At Wilson Island itself, several miles of trails are used for hiking, cross-country skiing, and mountain biking, and anglers can target catfish on the river. East - Prairie Rose State Park adds a small lake for boating, swimming, and shoreline fishing. Council Bluffs and Omaha are within easy reach for day trips, adding zoos, museums, riverfront trails, and casino entertainment for families basing out of a nearby RV park.

The main camping season in this part of Iowa runs from mid-spring through mid-fall. Wilson Island State Recreation Area is 100 percent reservable and open from April 15 through October 15, with the campground closed the rest of the year. Similar seasonal windows apply at other Iowa state park campgrounds in the region, including East - Prairie Rose State Park. Park staff generally aim to have water on and shower buildings and dump stations open by early May, and start closing shower buildings and shutting off water and dump stations around mid-October depending on the weather. Plan accordingly if traveling in shoulder season, since modern facilities are not guaranteed in April or late October, and water hydrants are shut off during the winter months. Wildlife viewing shifts through the year. Bald eagles often perch in the tall cottonwoods along the Missouri River in winter, and spring brings strong mushroom hunting. Wilson Island is open for public hunting in season, so both hunters and other visitors should exercise care during those periods. Private RV parks around Council Bluffs generally stay open year round.

State-park sites in this region tend to be spacious and well shaded. Wilson Island offers modern showers and flush toilets, a mix of electric and nonelectric sites, three large youth group camping areas that can be reserved in advance, and a playground near the shower building. Expect gravel or grass pads and limited or no sewer hookups at state-run parks, with a central dump station instead. Private RV parks near Council Bluffs typically offer full hookups, longer pull-throughs, Wi-Fi, and laundry, at the cost of a less natural setting. Cell coverage is generally solid across the region. Bring insect repellent for river-bottom sites, watch for deer on rural roads at dawn and dusk, and pack layers, since spring and fall nights can be sharp even when afternoons are warm.
