Campgrounds and RV parks near Tripoli, IA

Water and trails drive most trips in this corner of Iowa. George Wyth State Park centers on four lakes: Brinker Lake, George Wyth Lake, Fisher Lake, and Alice Wyth Lake, with fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and canoeing all popular. Brinker Lake offers power boating with a no-wake rule until 9 a.m., while George Wyth Lake is a no-wake lake with a swimming beach and universally accessible fishing pier. The park has 3.5 miles of paved multi-use trails and 10 miles of soft-surface trails, linked to a roughly 100-mile Cedar Valley trail network between Waterloo and Cedar Falls. Families staying at Waterloo/Lost Island KOA Resort get a different mix, with on-site disc golf, a dog park, swimming beach, mining sluice, and playground, plus a resort-style pool and the 15-acre Aloha Lake for fishing, paddleboats, and kayaks. The KOA sits across from the Lost Island Waterpark. River Ranch Camping is the closer choice for tubing, floating, and fishing the Little Cedar River.

Northeast Iowa has a strong seasonal camping window. Most private parks and the state campground operate roughly from spring through late fall. George Wyth State Park's campground is closed each year from November 1 through March 31, with peak season running May 1 through October 15. The campground is 100 percent reservable with no first-come, first-served sites, and April serves as a shoulder period before peak begins. Summer is the busiest stretch, with warm days, long evenings, and lake activity in full swing. Weekends fill fastest at riverfront and lake-adjacent sites, so booking well ahead is essential from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Spring and fall bring cooler nights and thinner crowds. Iowa weather can be variable with hot summers and cold winters, and severe weather including thunderstorms and tornadoes can occur, especially in spring and early summer. Winter camping is limited at George Wyth, though the park's trail system stays open for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and fat-tire biking.

Expect a mix of full-hookup RV resorts and simpler public campgrounds. George Wyth's 74-site campground includes 47 electric sites with 20/30/50 amp hookups, 13 non-electric sites, 6 tent-only sites, 3 walk-to sites, and a youth group site, with picnic tables and fire rings at every site plus modern restrooms with showers, a dump station, and water hydrants throughout. Concessions, including beach concessions, equipment rentals, and firewood sales, are not available at George Wyth for the 2026 recreation season. Private resorts near Tripoli lean toward amenities. Every RV site at Waterloo/Lost Island KOA has 50 amp service, water, sewer, cable TV, and WiFi, and deluxe cabins include linens and full bathrooms. Mosquitoes can be heavy during warmer months near lakes and river bottoms, so pack repellent.
