Campgrounds near Truro, Iowa
Truro sits in Madison County in south-central Iowa, roughly 30 miles south of Des Moines and a short drive from the covered bridges of Madison County. The area is rolling farmland with easy access to Interstate 35, making it a practical base for RV travelers exploring the Des Moines metro, Osceola, and Winterset.
Campground options within an hour of town range from full-service resort parks to a state-run campground and private family parks. Lakeside Casino Resort RV Park sits in Osceola off I-35 exit 34, with full-hookup pull-through sites next to the casino and hotel. Walnut Woods State Park, on the southern edge of West Des Moines, provides a shaded riverside campground with electric and full-hookup sites. Timberline Campground and Timberline RV Campground offer private-park amenities geared to families, and Shady Brook Camping and RV Adventures, LLC rounds out the nearby choices.
Sites fill quickly on summer weekends, especially those tied to Des Moines events, so trip planning should account for advance reservations and shoulder-season alternatives.
Things to do around Truro
Outdoor activity centers on the Raccoon River corridor and the wooded parks around West Des Moines. Walnut Woods State Park offers roughly two to three miles of trails through wooded bottomland along the Raccoon River, riverbank fishing, and a boat ramp for canoes. The Great Western Trail, a paved 16.5-mile multi-use path linking Des Moines and Martensdale, has a trailhead about three miles from the park.
Day trips work well from a Truro base. Winterset and the Madison County covered bridges are less than an hour southwest. Des Moines adds zoos, science centers, the state capitol, and the Iowa State Fairgrounds. Osceola brings casino gaming and lakeside recreation. Bird watching is strong along the Raccoon River, with more than 90 species recorded in the park.

Fall offers cooler nights, thinning crowds, and hardwood color through October. Winter camping is limited but possible at Walnut Woods, which keeps modern restrooms and a dump station in service, though water is typically turned off around November 1.
