Camping near Walford, Iowa
Walford sits in eastern Iowa's Cedar River corridor between Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, giving RV travellers quick access to a mix of state recreation areas, private RV resorts, and lakeside campgrounds. The surrounding Linn and Johnson County landscape is rolling farmland broken up by wooded river valleys, prairie remnants, and reservoirs.
The closest full-service option is Amana Colonies RV Park, a large campground in the historic Amana villages. Pleasant Creek State Recreation Area sits to the north near Palo, on a 410-acre no-wake lake. To the south around Solon and Oxford, BEYONDER Getaway at Sleepy Hollow, Cam lo-Dis-E-Ca, and Scales Pointe Camping and Boating cluster around Coralville Lake and Lake Macbride.
Most RV travellers use Walford as a base for day trips into Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, the Amana Colonies, and the Coralville Reservoir. Interstate 380 and Highway 151 make it easy to reach any of the campgrounds listed above within about a 30-minute drive.
Things to do near Walford
Water recreation drives most trips. Pleasant Creek Lake supports kayaking, canoeing, windsurfing, scuba diving, and pontoon boating, with four launching sites around the lake and a designated swimming beach open sunrise to sunset. The lake is stocked with muskellunge, channel catfish, largemouth bass, and white bass, and fishing jetties give shoreline access for all abilities.
On land, Pleasant Creek offers about twelve miles of multi-use trails for hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and equestrian riding, plus large tracts of restored prairie. The Amana Colonies add a non-outdoor option: seven historic German villages with shops, breweries, wineries, and a bike trail that connects to Amana Colonies RV Park.
Families staying at BEYONDER Getaway at Sleepy Hollow can use the on-site pool, pond fishing, and playground without leaving the campground.

Cam lo-Dis-E-Ca's family campground typically opens in early spring and closes in mid-fall.
Late spring and early summer bring the heaviest rainfall, with May and June averaging the wettest months of the year. This is also when the lakes have their best water clarity, which matters for divers at Pleasant Creek. Summer weekends are the busiest, so weekday stays are noticeably quieter at state-run sites.
Fall brings cooler temperatures, lower humidity, and Oktoberfest crowds in the Amana Colonies. Winter camping options are limited: most private and state campgrounds close, though ice fishing continues on Pleasant Creek Lake.
How to book Walford campgrounds
State-run sites at Pleasant Creek State Recreation Area are reserved through the Iowa DNR's online system at iowastateparks.reserveamerica.com or by phone at 1-877-427-2757. Every campsite is reservable and a reservation is required. Cabins carry a separate damage deposit that is collected at booking or on arrival.
Private campgrounds handle their own reservations. Amana Colonies RV Park takes bookings through its own website and offers full-hookup options among its sites. BEYONDER Getaway at Sleepy Hollow books through its own site or through partner platforms.
Cam lo-Dis-E-Ca's family campground is reserved directly with the campground. Summer weekends at all of these campgrounds fill early, so booking several weeks ahead is standard practice.
What to expect at Walford campgrounds
Sites in this area range from basic electric-only spots at Pleasant Creek to full-hookup pull-throughs at Amana Colonies RV Park. Pleasant Creek's three non-equestrian campgrounds have a mix of electric and non-electric sites, two modern shower and restroom buildings, and a water and sewer station near the entrance rather than at individual sites.
Amana Colonies RV Park offers mostly level gravel pads, wide access roads, laundry, a camp store, and Wi-Fi, though reviews note limited shade in some sections. BEYONDER Getaway at Sleepy Hollow sits on rolling terrain with a pond and small beach, a pool, a playground, and a mix of seasonal and short-stay campers.
Cell service is generally solid across the region, and most campgrounds enforce quiet hours, generator rules, and pet policies.
