Campgrounds and RV parks near Washburn, IA

The main draw for families is Lost Island Water Park and the adjacent Lost Island Theme Park, both directly next to the Waterloo/Lost Island KOA Resort. The KOA itself adds on-site recreation such as a dog park, playground, and other family amenities. Outdoor recreation centers on George Wyth State Park, which has four lakes, Brinker, George Wyth, Fisher, and Alice Wyth, for fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and canoeing, along with 3.5 miles of paved trails and 10 miles of soft-surface trails inside the park. Those trails tie into a roughly 100-mile regional trail network linking Waterloo and Cedar Falls, so cyclists can ride straight from camp into downtown for craft breweries, the Grout Museum District, and the Waterloo Center for the Arts. Anglers target crappie, bluegill, walleye, northern pike, bass, and channel catfish in the park lakes.

The prime RV window near Washburn runs from May through mid-October. George Wyth State Park sets its peak season from May 1 to October 15, with the campground closed from January 1 through March 31 and again from November 1 through December 31. Shoulder-season camping in April and late October is possible but limited, and services such as beach concessions, equipment rentals, and firewood sales at the park are not offered for the 2026 recreation season. Summer is warm and humid, with July highs averaging in the low 80s Fahrenheit and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. May is typically the wettest month in the Waterloo area, and severe weather including tornadoes is most likely in spring and early summer. Fall brings cooler nights, lighter crowds, and good foliage along the Cedar River. Winter is cold and snowy, with January mean temperatures near 18 degrees Fahrenheit and seasonal snowfall averaging around 35 inches. Most private RV parks in the area close or run on limited services, though George Wyth's trail system stays open for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and fat-tire biking.

Sites in the area are generally level with gravel or grass pads. The Waterloo/Lost Island KOA Resort offers hookup sites with 30 or 50 amp service, pull-throughs sized for larger rigs, laundry, and a camp store. George Wyth State Park has electric sites with 20, 30, and 50 amp service, non-electric sites, modern restrooms with showers, a dump station, and water hydrants distributed through the loops. Expect a mix of families, weekend anglers, and long-haul travelers using the parks as an overnight stop off US 20 or US 218. Mosquitoes can be heavy in warm months near the lakes and river, and highway noise from nearby routes is noticeable at George Wyth. Emerald ash borer is confirmed statewide in Iowa, so campers should follow current firewood guidance and avoid moving wood long distances.
