Camping near Woodward, Iowa
Woodward sits in Dallas County in central Iowa, roughly a half-hour drive northwest of Des Moines and within easy reach of the Des Moines River valley. The town is a practical base for RV travelers, with public and private campgrounds concentrated along a short corridor from Boone County down through the western Des Moines metro.
Ledges State Park, one of Iowa's earliest state parks, sits just north of Woodward near Madrid and offers electric and non-electric campsites, hiking trails, picnicking, and fishing along Pea's Creek and the nearby Des Moines River. Closer to the metro, Dallas County Fairgrounds Campground in Adel and Timberline RV Campground in the Waukee area cover full-hookup needs, while Cutty's Des Moines Camping Club in Grimes serves members and their guests.
Because the area mixes state park sites, county fairground sites, and private RV parks, availability, hookup levels, and reservation windows vary widely. Trip planning is easier when the choice is made early, especially for summer weekends and event dates.
Things to do around Woodward
Ledges State Park is known for a trail system that leads up and down steep slopes to overlooks of Pea's Creek canyon. The park's canyon drive, a winding one-way road along Pea's Creek, offers motorists views of the canyon and Des Moines River valley. Anglers can target catfish and smallmouth bass in the Des Moines River, along with walleye, northern pike, and carp.
For cyclists, the region connects to two long paved trails. The Raccoon River Valley Trail is a nearly 90-mile paved, non-motorized loop passing through 14 Iowa communities, and the High Trestle Trail crosses the Des Moines River on its landmark bridge near Madrid.
Families staying at private parks can plan pool time, playground time, and on-site activities, then drive into the Des Moines metro for the zoo, science center, and Adventureland.

Central Iowa has a strong seasonal camping calendar. The campground at Ledges State Park is closed January and February and again in December, with an off-peak shoulder in March and April, peak season May through mid-October, and another off-peak stretch through late November. Dallas County Fairgrounds Campground operates roughly April through October.
Summer brings the busiest weekends, especially around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day, and around the Iowa State Fair in mid-August. The Des Moines area climate is continental, with hot summers and frequent thunderstorms driven by clashing air masses that can produce sudden temperature changes and hail. Late spring and early summer are the wettest stretches, so rigs should be ready for storms.
Fall brings cooler nights and strong leaf color across the river valley. Winter camping options are limited because most public campgrounds close or drop to minimal service, and Iowa state parks switch to walk-in only from November through March at most locations.

What to expect on the ground
Sites in the area range from primitive state park loops to busier private parks. Ledges State Park has 94 campsites, with 40 electric sites, 42 non-electric sites, and 12 hike-in tent sites. Modern restrooms, showers, a dump station, and a playground are located in the campground. Cell service can be spotty, so plan for limited connectivity.
Private parks in the metro run larger and busier. Dallas County Fairgrounds Campground has close to 80 sites, with a mix of full-hookup and electric-only sites, 50-amp service available, showers, a dump station, a jumping pillow, and Wi-Fi. Timberline Campground offers a camp store, a pool, and family amenities in addition to RV sites.
Roads at Ledges are winding and hilly with several creek crossings, so larger rigs should study the site map before arrival.
