Campgrounds and RV parks near Garnett, KS

The Prairie Spirit Trail, a rail-trail running roughly 50 miles between Ottawa and Iola, passes through downtown Garnett and crosses the Crystal Lake dam, making it easy to ride or walk from the South Lake campsites into town. Lake Garnett and Crystal Lake both allow fishing, with non-gas-powered boats only on Crystal Lake, and Veterans Memorial Park hosts an annual rainbow trout season that requires a Kansas fishing license. Cedar Valley Reservoir handles larger boats and is the main draw for anglers chasing bass and catfish. In town, visitors have access to a public swimming pool, disc golf, ball fields, the Garnett Country Club golf course, and seasonal events including concerts, car shows, and rodeos. The Lake Garnett Grand Prix Revival brings vintage sports cars to a circuit around Lake Garnett each summer.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in this part of Kansas. Daytime highs sit in the mild range, the prairie greens up in April and May, and fall delivers cooler nights and color along the lake shorelines. Spring is also the wettest stretch of the year, with May normally the rainiest month; thunderstorms, occasional severe weather, and tornado watches are part of the regional pattern from April through June, so travelers should monitor forecasts and know their campground's storm shelter situation. Summer is peak season at the city lakes. Holiday weekends fill quickly, especially the limited sites at Crystal Lake, and the Lake Garnett Grand Prix Revival weekend drives heavy demand for nearby pads including Garnett Inn Suites and RV Park. Daytime heat and humidity climb into the low 30s Celsius, so shaded sites and electric hookups for air conditioning matter. Winter camping is possible at hookup parks like Garnett Inn Suites and RV Park, but city wilderness sites see far less use once temperatures drop and overnight lows settle below freezing.

City lake sites near Garnett tend to be open and grassy with limited shade, level concrete pads at the developed RV spots, picnic tables, fire rings, and water plus electric hookups at the serviced loops. Wilderness sites are self-contained, so plan for no hookups and pack out trash. Cell coverage is generally workable for major carriers in town and around the lakes, though it thins out at Cedar Valley Reservoir. Roads into the parks are paved or hard-packed gravel and handle larger rigs without issue, but travelers with longer Class A or fifth-wheel units should confirm pad length when booking. Mosquitoes and ticks are active from late spring through early fall, especially near the lake edges and along the Prairie Spirit Trail. Grocery, fuel, and propane are available in Garnett.
